I'm sure there must be some good things about living in the USA if you look hard enough.

Well, for one thing I learned that in terms of inflation, we are only 24th in the world, and that many of the European countries are ahead of us. Including the UK, I think.

For another, we are farther away from Russia so we are less likely to be involved in Putin's antics... although Vladimir HAS lately been talking about retaking Alaska. Probably wants the oil reserves there.

One really nice part of living in the USA is not having an official state religion. The UK has one but doesn't push it that hard. But some nations in the Middle East get downright nasty if you aren't a Muslim.

Another nice part is that we can have anyone we want as a friend. But in those Middle East countries with the narrow social viewpoints, folks who are of the wrong religion or who happen to be gay can be a source of problems via "guilt by association."

Tee-hee, only a majority of the world's inventions, scientific discoveries, and academia

We do share a border with Russia! ;)

True - across the Bering Straits. But then, we paid cash for that territory. Now they want it back. Invading might, however, be a serious mistake. Besides the rough terrain, right now it's seriously cold and heading hard towards colder.

What I actually believe in more detail is that both countries have their own, very different reasons to be proud and there need not be any grudging, grumpy, resentful competition between the two. While it is a strange feeling to visit a place where you get the feeling that 75% of everything everybody does is based on tourism rather than actual industry, I am sure there is a certain noble feeling to that too - after all, you're showing people a lot of great historical stuff about the world. Brits have a reputation for being haughty and it's not a good look, but I think we can all rise at least above the bar of "resentful", if we try

yes, its called culture - something the usa may have in a few centuries time.

It's called individualism. God help us if we were like Americans.

You would surely need God's help to reach that pinnacle.

--- come on, Col, you know better than to give me a straight line like that!

I'm not sure this is strictly true.
You very rarely hear a normal (Non Media) British person saying they are any good at anything.

We could be accused of thinking we are superior, but we very rarely actually come out and say it. From a public perspective that's definitely a more American trait.
We do of course have a smug satisfaction that we are obviously superior ;)

Because we do have centuries of history it's not the only thing we are good at displaying, but as a visiting tourist, you are unlikely to see medical and other world-leading scientific research that is carried out within our industries and our Universities.
We still make some of the best cars in the world. And our real beer is better 🍻

Unfortunately, our government and politicians have joined the ranks of the highly untrustworthy, and are out of touch with reality, and the news is now social media frenzy driven rather than objective and fact-driven. Our media isn't quite as polarised as the US news networks, but you still need to get three or four opinions from different sources to get some degree of balance.

Just checking you are awake! A nice easy one for you.

Plus of course, we can get through 3 Prime Ministers in 6 months whereas if the USA has an idiot president, you're stuck with them for the duration of their term. Best way out is assassination it seems.

There's a lot of advantages to living in the UK and the USA - I often wonder whether our own self-criticism and anxiety holds us back (and a problem in all other countries)
