Jack Vance (1916-2013) was an excellent Science Fiction author. He seldom gets mentioned in the internet headline news feeds discussing the "best of ...". So it was a very pleasant surprise when I saw this article: "Where to Start With Jack Vance". Definitely start with the Dying Earth series. As far as I know, his stories have not yet made it into the movies.
One trilogy stands out with a Twilight Zone ending is: "The Durdane series". In that series, the protagonist after years of endless battles rises with the aid of an off-world spy to become the ruler of the world to impress a girl he is hot for. As the story ends, he professes his love for her. Her contemptuous response, "What makes you think I love you?" Crushed, the protagonist asks the spy to take him off-world now that they have won. The harsh response of the spy: "What makes you think that I am your friend". The story ends with the protagonist being left alone on his planet with nothing!
