I got asked yesturday

apart from the Data protection act (1998) is their any other laws I have to take into account before I create a database which holds personal information?

I can't think of any and a quick search didn't bring anything up.

I know that the Data Proection was designed to cover holding personnal information but it did get me thinking.

Depends what it is and what it's used for.

If it handles financial (credit card) transactions there's a whole host of regulations that you have to take into account.

If it's for a statutory body then you also have to look at the freedom of information act (well maybe not have to but certainly advisable for your clients sake) just in case an application is made. Then there rules that govern what sort of information you hold and for how long, it's relevance and who is allowed have access to it and for what purpose.

It just depends.

Very few laws are made that are specific to databases, but there are tons of laws for the specific industries regarding privacy, accuracy, record-keeping, and the like. They vary from country to country and from industry to industry.

It depends upon the nature of the business and the relationship between you and the source of informaiton

example this forum - we enter in our names dates of birth where we are from .. so there is a tactile relation with the website owner (Jon) and as we have entered the information the relationship is granted for Jon to hold this ...
If Jon was to gather information from various sources then the relationship is different and what information is stored is regulated ..
However there is also another element to bring in to this - if the information is in the Public domain then there are no rules govering the use of a d/base however if someone wishes to be removed from the D/base there si a requiremnt upon you to do so ..

The only other possible one/s are:

Computer Misuse Act
Freedom of Information Act
