Linked table to Excel

I used to be able to open a link to a spreadsheet in a networked, shared Excel file, without the file actually opening on my desktop.

Now, the file wants to open every time I try to create a linked table - but I don't want it to open, because of all the code it goes through. I just need a peek at one spreadsheet.

Any ideas on why this changed?

Another question: Is there a way to open a connection or create a linked table to an Excel spreadsheet without interfering with someone else using the actual file?

Thanks,
MD

no, the excel file must NOT be open.
you will get an error if excel has it open AND access has it open.

try saving backwards to the old .xls version and link it.
or
delete the table and relink

If I save it as .xls, will this remove all the code and macros?
