Looking at creating a database that looks up records based on a number from a magnetic card. Has anyone ever come across any code that will pull the info from the serial port? I have been looking for 2 days and not able to find anything. I have the card reader but do not have any software to get the info from the serial port and my limted coding does not even come close to what I need. Any help or a push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matthew

I have an application that uses a card reader. I didn't do it personally, but the reader was able to be programmed to read the data plus issue a carriage return, so it's just like keyboard input. I simply used the after update event of a textbox to accept the swipe and process the result. You might check the reader's documentation and see if it can be set up the same way. One way to test is open Notepad, have the cursor in it, and swipe a card.

Thanks. Unfortunatly it is not a keyboard wedge and can not be set to emulate one. It is built from spare parts at work. I know it is sending data through the serial port by using a com port tester program, but I don't know how to get the data from the serial port into access.

Thanks,
Matthew

What type of magnetic cards are they? Most cards can have up to 3 lines of info on them and certain readers can only read certain lines.

Or maybe your are you trying to scam credit/debit card details?

Nothing bad is on my mind. ;) I actually work at a casino and during break one day it came up during a conversation that we did not have a way to check IDs against a master list of people who were trespassed without going through the list manually. So as a project to do at home I thought I might try and see if I could get the name from the mag strip of the IDs and check it against the list. Here is the card reader that I am using.
