Messed up back end table big time

Several years ago I created my first Access database and fortunately it has been running fine for years; unfortunately, I haven't looked at it since and have forgotten everything about it! I have my database split into a front end and back end. I went to copy the front end to the hard drive of a new user then went to link it to the back end on the network. I wasn't paying attention and accidently linked the back end database to itself! The file size is the same so I am assuming the data is still there but I can't get to it. I was going to just restore the file but found out that our network folks haven't done a back up in weeks so they will lose data if I do that. I tried importing the data to a new database but get an error. Do I have any options?

Thanks in advance!

Christie

Christie,

That's actually fair game for the software to do. Didn't you just get a
"1" appended to the name of each of your linked tables?

Yes I did get a 1 at the end and like an idiot, I deleted the original table and renamed the second one! That means I was renaming a link to something that no longer existed! My data is now gone and to make matters worse, I just found out that our network people have not backed the file up since August! Basically, I am done! We restored from August and I am praying that I still have a job!

Thanks anyway for trying!

Hopefully, you will see the network people headed out the door before you -- no backup since August indeed! I have a compress program that automatically copies the data first, then compresses. With that thought in mind, you might want to look to see if someone copied the data (or the data and the program) to another directory somewhere along the line since August.

Good luck!

Lesson 1:

Don't let your job rely on other people.

Our IT does backups daily.

I still backup my databases myself onto my system daily, and on a DVD-R monthly.

Christie,

Just wanted to add two cents more ...

Crilen007 has a good point. I have seen the IT people dutifully "back up", but
the b/u software didn't touch the files currently open for "read/write" access.

I've also found out after the fact that the nice IT folks had a 5-tape rotation,
so that anything older than one working week was unretrievable!

Back up YOUR data frequently, especially if others are trying to help you.
