I have a growth record table and I need to select the record with the most recent date to make a comparison with a new record date.

Any suggestions?

I tried "DMax([GDate])" in the field row of the query but this returned all the records for that client.

Am I using the function in the wrong way?

I would expect to see at least two parameters being passed to DMax(), but if you are working in a query, SQL provides a Max() function, which may be preferable.
