After flying a lot to make a living it is more relaxing to either drive my motorbike or take a train or bus places and actually see the countryside. On short haul flights if you include door to door transit times with the security checks and such it is faster to take the train or bus, certainly a lot less stressful.

It is quite ignorant to paint USA with the "everyone is armed" brush, there are many other countries where it is common place to see various levels of public and private security baring firearms. Many of those countries you dont have to worry about the arms you see, but the ones you do not see on the under cover personel are a deeper concern.
But if you dont get out much and live in a bubble then it is easy to asume and judge, rather then be educated and learn from being places or doing things.

Shame your trip to Costa Rica was cancelled from personal conflicts, it is beautiful there...

We deal with TSA just as much just flying within our own borders. It really is quite a pain.

There is quite a bit of ignorance about the outside world in small towns in the US. I think it's partially due to the sheer size of the entire US and the fact they don't really get out of their own surrounding areas much coupled with upbringing. I'm sure this is true for all countries though. There are a few members on this forum alone who are quite ignorant of how it really is in America as well, without going into any names. I'm sorry you experienced this slight annoyance though, was it perhaps in a Southern state? :D

...maybe it wasn't a Southern state... :p

No, guns aren't all over the US and unless you find yourself in a very bad area and pick a fight with someone or try to commit a crime on someone who happens to be a carrier, you will probably never see one while visiting unless it's strapped to a police officer's belt.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. I plan on coming to the UK soon. I actually wish to travel through England and Ireland. I haven't been out of the country in a while and my trip to Costa Rica was cancelled due to drama with friends.

After knowing a number of people hunt for food and the stories about police officers.

Some people prefer the taste of wild food over store bought, plus with human interference, the natural order is so upset we not have to kill of excess animals so the the rest can survive.

Police officers have had to go to extremes after a number of people stopped for minor traffic violations have shot officers or attacked in various ways or turned out to be dangerous criminals. It seems that only about 10% of the people cause about 90% of the problems.

I am a little confused with your post. Are you saying that people are hunting with guns or some other devise or are you saying that you know people that are foraging for food in trash cans? Secondly are you saying we should kill animals or that they are killing animals unnecessary? Third how does all this connect with the thread? Please clue me as I am a little dense.

Anybody Brits or Aussies ever visit my home stae Rhode Island, and if so what part?
Dick S.

But the cops always seem to draw their guns on the police footage programmes, then get the poor motorist to lie down arms spread, legs spread just for a minor traffic offence.

Plus, people here seem to have guns just to satisfy their lust for killing animals. Don't supermarkets there stock meat? Why do you have to go out and kill animals to eat?

Col
Three thoughts.
1. A number of hunters prefer wild game to store bought meat.
2. Hunters are needed to cull certain species since humans have wrecked the natural order of things and the predators for these animals are gone or too small of a population to make much effect.
3. Police officers have gone to an extreme, because a number of times a 'routine' traffic stop has become violent (drivers attacking the officer).

I hope this clears up my thoughts.

Someone please explain to me what the difference is between a butcher that makes his living by sledge hammering a cow in the head, so that the food market can sell it to someone with a squish stomach, and someone shooting a rabbit, or someone catching a fish and letting it suffocated in the fisherman’s bag. I don’t see a difference.

Of course, police officers have been going to a new extreme as well. A handcuffed woman sitting on a curb being kicked in the head, etc... It's important for civilians to be able to protect themselves from all threats, civilian or police, for when they step out of line.

I am not defending hunters in general, but there is the issue of somehow culling the animals that used be eaten by predators that are now gone. I know that there are a number of gun happy individuals that will shoot about anything for no particular reason.

I was puzzled by this post until I realised that the first paragraph was quoting Col (aka Davep), it would be helpful if quotes of other posts was indicated.

Having seen the way the thread has gone I regret making the comment about the cop and his gun, hunting has been covered in previous threads. And col refuses to understand the issues.

Some people have demonstrated they have hoplophobia and perhaps are a bit xenophobic, so it is not so surprizing that the thread was deviated in that direction.

Some people still raise animals for their own food, in Canada they are called "farmers" and many of these "farmers" own "firearms" in order to humainely dispatch the animals. There are also people who fish from their rivers, these people are often called "fishermen", many are humain enough to dispatch their prey humainely rather then allow them to suffocate to death. Humain dispatching also ensures that the animal is not under duress, which often results in the texture and flavour of the meat becoming spoiled.

There are good reasons for some people to carry firearms for certain defense reasons, just ask Nick Buckles.

Not been to Rhode Island but very close, Been to Groton and New London, which is not so far away from Rhode Island I believe

Yes very close, I have been there myself many times. By any chance where you there in connection with the Navy.
What did you find that you liked and disliked about CT/US. Here is what also interests me. I ask this of people coming to the US often. Surely you had read or heard things about the US. What surprised you the most? For example I ask a man from Poland. He said he heard that US had a lot of food but when he went to his first super markets, it was more food than he had ever imagined. I ask a young oriental that was the manager of a Chinese Buffet restaurant, and he said the thing that surprised him the most is how hard you have to work in the US if you want anything in life.

Now are you a Brit or Aussie, or something else, I see you don't have a profile yet.

Scottish Mate!

I loved the place, been up and down the East coast as Ive got lots of relatives in the states. My cousin works in the naval yard in New London and my other cousins serves with the navy.

Preconceptions? First time I went I was quite young (about 12 or so) so I just expected everything to be bigger, and everything was!!!!!! Great place, friendly people.

Firstly, "humaine" is spelt incorrectly.

Secondly, never heard of Nick Buckles.

Thirdly, I know what farmers are, and they have shotguns in the UK.

Fourthly, there are good reasons people carry firearms? - Ah yes, they can shoot up a cinema full of people in Colorado really quickly. . . . . yawn - when will the US wake up about guns? Never, is the answer - it's sooooooo macho to have a gun, like the losers here on these forums that belong to "gun club" sites.

Do people raise animals for their own food? How positively prehistoric.

Animals for human consumption should be killed using a captive bolt pistol after being stunned and not just shot. Mrs Rabbie is a vet and she tells me it is not easy for an untrained person to kill an animal humanely

I assume the Nick Buckles you are referring to is the CEO of G4S who have made a mega ****-up of the Olympic Security. In that case I wouldn't ask for his opinion on anything

Indeed, not all people who dispatch animals do so humainely, even some of the abattoirs use less then effective methods in their quest for mass cost efficient processes.
Mrs/Dr Rabbie has a very honourable and commendable profession, please send her my regards and unsolicited thanks. Certainly not the easiest of professions.

Yes - that would be the Nick Buckles - will he be going to the gallows for treason?

It was sad to hear of those shootings the other day in Columbia.

No Law is going to stop this type of thing from happening.

Isn't it time we stoped putting the USA down because of their gun laws.
