I was hoping could assist me. I have a database which runs on Access 2003. I want to use the database on two computers and I want to put the database on the shared folder on the network. However, When I open one on one computer it does not open on the other. Why it is doing this?

I thought that only applied to 2007,2010 and not 2003. But shouldn't it still open on both computers even if dont split it. The link you send would it work with 2003?

It may or may not but IMHO it is a recipe for disaster. As Paul has already advised a split database in the correct set up in this scenario.

is it easy or difficult to split a database, the database was made by a programmer and i am just a user, im a novice i know some basics is it something that i would be able to do or should i try to get my programmer to do it for me?

I do not know what you define as Easy or Hard ! but IMO it is very easy, follow Albert's article.
Some would advocate that ALL access Dbs should be split.
I am sure we are "some" of them Bob ! :)

So the database splitter is pretty simple. I went to tools and clicked the database splitter. So I have the file with be on the end in the same folder as the original. So I have two files database and database be. Be is backend. Now I am confused, which is the one I put on the shared folder for the network. Do I leave the file with BE in the normal folder?

I told you ;)

No the BE will be in the shared folder and the Front end should be distributed to the other users. You normally would place the whole fiel in the shared folder and then split the DB there, so you would not have to relink the FE with BE.

If you have Split the DB anywhere outside the shared folder, then I would suggest you to relink the FE tables using the Linked Table manager, after placing the BE file in the shared location.

i've done a couple of tests so i still have the original. so i have a folder where all the files are saved. the folder is called db1. so if i copy the folder onto my shared folder then i split the database. so i leave the be database as is and the normal database which i assume is the front end. so i copy the front end onto the other computers and then it should link to the back end on the shared folder?

Spot on ! :)

ok so i gave this a try but i wasn't fully sure, so i thought i would ask before i mess something up. I put the whole folder in the shared folder and then i split the database in the shared folder. Now do I copy the front end onto each computer? I want to try with two computers only. Also the folder has other files such as excel files and another access file which is linked to the database so I leave them in the folder I have put in the shared folder. So I only copy the front end on to each computer and they will link to the be on the shared folder. So if i make changes on one computer will I be able to see them on the other front end on the other computer?

Can't advise on the "other files", but yes, just copy the front end file to any computer on the network that needs access to the data in the back end. At worst, you may have to use the Linked Table Manager that comes with Access to link to the tables. Give it a try. Can't see that you should have any problems.
