Good Morning All

I use to work in Access, SPSS, & SAS (years ago). However, I am a little lost and have a demographic project I HAVE to get going on TODAY! I've read a lot of posts and it seems to confuse me more than ever.

Attached is the Demographic Survey. There were approximately 600 respondents, from 5 of our area tranist stations. We just need to have a simple database form(s) set up with other tables.

Basically, I need help setting up the original form and THINK I need to have 3 separate tables attached for the different sections.

Sections are (in the order they appear on the survey):

Demographic Information (Age, gender, race, birth country, income, city they live in)

Tranisit passenger info: Route currently riding / boarding; How they would like to receive information about MCT; How they pay for bus fare; How often they ride the bus: Purpose of bus trip; Vehicle available in household.

Interviewer Info: Route #, Bus #, Starting Location (we have transit stations in 5 area cities), Interview location (options: Transit Station, inside moving bus, or inside a parked vehicle AT the transit station), Interview Time, Interview Date, and Day of Week.

I KNOW I'm asking for a lot, but I'm on a serious deadline and would appreciate setting up the INITIAL form accurately so I can create queries to analyze the information.

Please refer to the attached form showing the survey.

THANK YOU!!!! I just need a basic data base with tables so I can analyze data.

Julie

Well, a bit late but who knows...

Attached is a 'squelton' DB that could be a first step solution. Your project is not simple; a good solution would be quite complex...

Good luck,

Thanks for your help! Here is my first "stab" at the survey that I started yesterday. For this purpose, I just need a real simple way of showing the results of the data....for now. Either through a graph or table.

Can I keep all the data on one table...or do I have to create sub forms? If so, I am a little confused as to how to ID what goes in the subform?

Down the road, the main thing we are looking at is the passenger relationship to demographics (income, race, age, etc).

Am I on the right track with my DB? Thanks in advance!

Julie

Your first 'stab' shows that you are skillfull with Access; alas, there are some design flaws.

Using value list for combos is looking for trouble, especialy with your project that will eventualy yield statistical analysis.

Have a look to the linked DB; you will notice that I propose a 'numerical' encoding of the answers. I have done lots of survey analysis: using 'text' coding especialy with SPSS causes all kinds of problems.

Of course, it's somewhat more complex then you probably expected but remember this old Zwaziland saying: the time you spend on the design of a DB will pay off later on usage...

Thanks SO much for your help. I figured I had to link tables together, but wasn't sure. Is there a resource out there to learn Access specifically for surveys?

I purchased the "Inside out" of Access. But, it doesn't specifically talk about surveys.

I'm trying to figure out the steps for analysis. Again, the CEO wants the analysis to be simple and understandable. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

To my knowledge, there is no such book or package. When I needed smothing (qui sqare, student's T-Test, N distribution...) I just plain coded it...

I still have this stuff somewhere and will pass it to you if you need it.

Could you give details on the kind of stats you plan to drun?

Forget about add-ins - they are too expensive!

Hi JL

Thanks for your help. For purposes of this survey, I think T-Test will be sufficient for this particular case.

Hi Julie,

Unfortunately, the T-test procedure made to test lot <-> population were lost - the company went abruptly bankrupt and I forgot to copy this very special package.

However, running a T-Test is very simple. Get the formulas from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student's_t-test

and the T values from:
http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/gerstman/StatPrimer/t-table.pdf

Since you probably have more then 100 values per sample, the interpretation will be strait forward.

By the way, do you know anything about R statistical package? It is free, quite complete and strange enough in its usage ( typical of 'matheux' ). If you're patient enough, you will find almost everything you need.

Good patience,
JLCantara.

Hi JL,

Thanks for ALL of your input. I am in the middle of another project. But, once I am done with that I will be moving on to this survey. I'm hoping I can contact you when further questions arise.

Thanks again!

Julie

Hi Julie,

As we say in french (Montréal) ti-guidou (all right). I thing you can send me a 'private' message, but I don't know how...

Otherwise, just post in the same category.

Good luck with your projects,
JLCantara.
