I can't figure out what the green lights under one's name in threads mean? I just saw a red one and now I'm totally confused.com.......

Red indicates (I think) that people have gone out of their way to disapprove of a person's posts rather than approve of them may be wrong.

Ah, an asshole... I see now.... Cheers! Good BH weekend!

Green is good. Red is bad. You get rep based on people's responses to your posts. If they like it, they will approve of the post, dislike, disapprove...get the drift? The more posts a person has, the better rep you get from their approval. I cant remember what the cutoffs are but you get another green dot when you get so much rep.. etc..

Not necessarily.... Sometimes a person makes a mistake.... It doesn't automatically mean that they are doomed for life.... Besides, there are plenty fo those with green reps too. :) It just depends.

The drift is got - and good point Kryst. Consider me educated!

Ah... did do a search earlier, my ecxellent typing skills must have steered me wrong again...

Well, have a nice weekend! Hopefully someone somewhere will get some sun this BH weekend eh??

And just another bit of info -

Until you get to 500 points, you get a new green blob for every 100 points of rep that is given to you. Each person starts off with 10 points in rep and 1 green blob. If they get less than 10 points (meaning disapproving) then it turns red. After you get to 500 (6 green blobs) you have to get a whole lot more to get a seventh. Not sure where the cutoff is for that.

As you have time on the board and you have more posts and you get more rep points, the rep points you have are worth more and more. So, if you are just starting out, you can give comments but your rep doesn't give points (hence a gray jelly in the rep area of the person you just gave rep to). After about 50 points and/or some time (not sure how much) on the board you will get 1 point to give. Then it grows from there. Someone who has been on the board for many years and has many, many posts and has a lot of rep points themselves will give away a ridiculous number of points for each person they give reputation to. When disapproving, it does not affect it like when you approve. It only removes half of the number of points your account would give if it was positive approval.

There are different sayings associated with your account (when you mouse over the green jellies on someone's post or profile) like "X is on a distinguished road." These change based on your posts as well and will change starting at 50 points and then at 150, 250, 350, etc. So, halfway between your jellies, the saying changes.

Hopefully that helps explain it a bit more. It probably should really just go away as it has affected people (me included, in the past) and it would be better served just to not have it at all. But as it is here (and Jon isn't likely going to turn it off any time soon) at least you know what it means.

Excellent thanks Bob - someone criticised me about the rep bit in my signature the other day, but I think it's good - help people, get recognised for it like.

Catch you in 4 days!

Remember the magic word for rep points

Normalisation.

Some people on here really struggle with normalisation. ;-) We can only do our best to guide them in the right way.

Personally, I think the rep system is redundant. If people feel the need for rep points to help someone, they are doing so for the wrong reasons.

And that is why I said they should probably be turned off. They are an ego thing and it would just be better if they weren't around. Maybe someone can start a petition in the site suggestions and have Jon turn them off. Okay, I think I will (since I suggested it :D )
