Paradox table import: not working

I have been given a paradox .DB file that I can (seemingly) "import" to Access 2002 SP3 using File/Get External Data/Import. (Am not choosing "Link Tables"). It gets imported as Type Table: Linked Paradox. When I then open the table for a datasheet view, the following happens:
(1) datasheet window appears with field headings and normal-appearing data in all records and fields
(2) error msg appears "Reserved error (-5016), there is no message for this error"
(3) When I close the msg box, all field data gets replaced by #Name? I can open the table in design view, but no properties can be edited.

Any way around this?

Importing From Paradox

Well, first, if one other doctor replies, you'd have a pair 'o docs.... (bah-DUM-bump)

Seriously, I recall doing this before with no sweat, and that was PDox for windows and Ac95!!! So I know this ability has been around for a long time.

When you installed Office, did you do a custom install that included ALL Paradox support options? If you don't do either a FULL install or a CUSTOM install that selected the options, you don't get them all. If you have the Office kit, you can re-install Office to add options using the custom install interface. I've done that before with frequent success. (Yeah, I know... with a Bill Gates product, that almost sounds like bragging. :) )

As a work-around, Paradox should be able to EXPORT to comma-delimited text files (if you actually have Paradox and not just the database file). I would try that if possible, or ask the person who gave you the DB if that export is an option for you yourself.

Lacking a copy of Paradox itself AND lacking the Paradox support options, you would have to figure out how to reverse-engineer the DB and I cannot legally tell you how to do that.

So let's try something else. You said,...

(2) error msg appears "Reserved error (-5016), there is no message for this error"

WHEN does this happen? I.e. what are you doing at the time? NOTHING? Trying to copy something? Scrolling through the tables? Twiddling thumbs?

How big is the DB and how much free space do you have on the partition where the Access DB resides?

Try doing a Google search on "Access error -5016" then try again for a "Paradox error -5016" - see if anyone has reported it before. The "Reserved error" message suggests that this is an error reserved for use by Microsoft in general, NOT specific for Access or Paradox.
