I am currently in an Access 2007 course and one of my assignments (in the textbook) is to open a certain report in Layout view and Design view. The problem is that my report can only be displayed in Report view or Print Preview view (when I open the report). Is there a way to make the Layout view and Design view available to use? I am extremely new to Access and I have no clue how to get these views available to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you using an mdb file or an accdb file? If you are using an mdb file you wouldn't have layout view available to you because it doesn't exist within an mdb file. It is only available in the newer accdb file format.

It is a accdb file. The strange part about this is, my friend is also in the same class and her report shows all four views (like the textbook example). For some reason, my report only shows the two views. I was hoping there was some way to make the views available to me.

Well, I can replicate the no Layout view but I haven't been able to replicate your No design view. I get design view on a report unless I make it an accde file. Can you open a form in design view, or any other report in design view?

I opened my database up just now and this is very strange, the tables and forms that I could open in different views will not let me open them in the design view or form view. I just worked on this last week and all the views were available at that time. I only have one other report and it will not let me view it in layout or design....

Maybe you need to ensure that it is in a trusted location and also make sure that you have full read/write/delete permissions on the current folder. You didn't put it in the root of your C drive did you?

I set up a trusted location (per the instructions in the book) but it does show the root to be the C drive.

You can't set the root to be a trusted location. You have to have at least one folder up from the root.

So, try creating one like

C:\MyDbs

and then move the database there and make it the trusted location.

Okay, I will try that! Thanks so much for all of your help!

I think your problem is that the Allow Layout View property (which you will find on the Property Sheet under the Format tab) is set to No. Change it to Yes.

Yes, that would explain the layout not being there, but it doesn't explain why DESIGN view wouldn't be there.

Okay, I just opened the report and there is no option to click on for property sheet. I know for a fact all of this was there last when I worked on my assignment, now the options are gone :( Even when I right click the title in the navigation pane, the option to view properties is grayed out.

Can you upload the database to the forum here so we can take a look? If we can see it and you can't then it narrows it down to your installation or your machine. If we have the same problem then we might be able to figure out why.

First of all, I would like to thank you guys for all your help. I have finally figured out, after hours on the phone with Microsoft, that I have an invalid key for the Microsoft Professional that I just purchased and that was the reason that all of the buttons and options were grayed out. Luckily, the gentleman who sold me the program is going to give me a full refund. I really do appreciate all of your help. I hope to get a valid version of the program Monday and get back on track with all of my homework. Have a great weekend!

Oh, good. Glad you got that straightened out. It did seem very strange indeed. :)
