Running total (HELP)

I need to make a running total query for when people make payments I need to keep track of what kind of payment date of payment and how much along with the total amount due based on payments. I need to make a query that will give me a break down of payments and balances for each payment. As in on balance is 7,000 february 1 payment was 1,000.00 balance now due is 6,000 see what I mean?? I guess that part would show up in a report but I'm not exactly sure how to set up the query. =count (*) will give me a total but not a break down of charges and payments. I'm guessing one field can say [fineamount]- [payment] in a query but I want to show dates of payments...like a running total for the year. Does that make sense
