Access is more like a screen shot of a graph. At least in 2000. The graphs just are not that user friendly. I can make them much better in Excel. I just do not know how to get the info there.
If this is something you want to do routinely, you may want to query the db from excel whenever you open the workbook. From excel goto Data->Get external data. It will let you build a query against your database using Microsoft Query.

I think the graph engine is the same but the Excel implementation via the wizard is more robust IME and allows more customization than the Access equivalent. I tear my hair out sometimes trying to make scatterplots work correctly in Access 2K.
Not that I think the graphing engine in Excel is wonderful either. Honestly, graphing in MS Office doesn't seem to have changed much since Office 95 came out. There were graphing options in 1994's Sigmaplot that you still can't do in Excel!
