Question Shared database got read only coz of locking file not deleted

Dear All,

I am facing one trouble which makes my entire project worthless. I have a database in MS Access which i split as a front end & back end. My back end is on shared drive & front end on user pc's. When i am opening my front end let say two users just logged in and both are using it's working fine but when both the user shutdown the database i mean front end. The record locking file is still there its not disappearing & because of that my database is in read only mode after that. My server is a Bank server where the database kept as a shared which can't be restarted. And tell me how to open a record locking file.
I would really be grateful if promptly replied with description.

Each user that uses the database must have read, write AND DELETE permissions on the folder in which the backend resides.

Yes everyone do have read / write & deletion rights.

Do a test. Have one user open the database and then close it and make sure the ldb/lccdb file goes away. If you get user where it does not go away then you know you need to check their permissions very closely again.

is there any option for user access in MS access ?? Well I am in bank so network security changing is a huge task. And if you are talking about a user access within the MS access then tell me.

Nope, not user access within Access. It is NETWORK security. Each user on the NETWORK has to have the read/write/delete NETWORK permissions. So, if a user does NOT have delete permission and is the last out of the database, then Access can not delete the locking file.

see what is happening i & other users can delete the database (the main shared database) but not the record locking file.
I don't understand why is it happening & why my database turn into read only mode when that record locking file is not disappearing after all users logged out.

So, have each user reboot their computer to see if it goes away. Someone might have an instance of Access running in their Task Manager that isn't visible to the desktop. You will need to have each person reboot their computer. Then, if all instances of Access are closed the locking file should go away or be able to be deleted.

And if my shared database on my server which can't be restarted then what is the solution i really amazed to see as i myself as a standalone using that and that record locking file was not disappearing & made my database read only. even i but a quit button on my main form so that the database shutdown properly with the front end.

Let me try to restate this.

Each user frontend (which you say is on their machine) is linked to the backend database on the server. When the frontend is opened and a table of the backend is opened by a form, control, etc. in the frontend then the locking file appears for the backend. When all usrs close their frontends then the locking file SHOULD disappear.

I am not telling you to restart your server. I am telling you to have ANYONE who uses the database to restart THEIR COMPUTER so that if there are any accidental instances of the database open they will shut down and then release the locking file which then SHOULD be able to be deleted.

Yes you got it 100%. Record locking file should disappear well i will try once again tomorrow i am really fade up with that problem my entire project is completed just stuck coz of this. I myself was using the database today & no other user, at that time file got locked i restarted my PC but it didn't got vanished. How is this possible any clue on it.

Just wondering - your network server - is it running Novell software for its operating system? I had issues like this before when I was working for a place that was using Novell as the OS (not Windows Server by Microsoft).

That our IT fellow was discussing i remember he said Windows but not to sure which version of Windows. Really i got a shock of my life i am not getting any assistance from anywhere like browsing ...but nothing you atleast provide me some solution .. will try to see in it. And even if as you said if I close the database but sometimes it is running in back end by going in task manager. Suppose i cudn't find it there.

You would be looking for MSACCESS.EXE on the users' machines. It isn't going to be running on the server even if the locking file is there, Access doesn't run on the server. It runs only on the user's machine. So that is where you would be looking for MSACCESS.EXE in the processes list of the task manager on THEIR machine and yours when you think you have all Access closed.

I don't have internet in office will send from my office email And in access Options there are record locking option in Access with me its no locks & Shared also tick on open database by using record level locking
