I am looking at changing my hosting package, and so at some time over the near future, expect the site to be down for a significant amount of time (hours, not days). The host has to migrate from one server to another, whilst also changing the backend from cpanel to directadmin.

I know you will give us a warning when you get closer to the switchover. Having run three major platform changes for the Navy site, I'm totally familiar with what a pain in the toches it can be. Good luck!

Maybe because cPanel licensing seem to just keep going up!

Very little risk if just changing hosting package and should take minutes but the migration from cPanel to DirectAdmin needs to be done methodically! Changing the host to another is a different ball game... Hours and higher risk - Thanks for the heads up... Hope it goes smooth...

DirectAdmin is lighter, faster, cheaper, and simpler. cPanel is heavier, more feature‑rich, and more expensive.

When the switchover happens might be in the hands of the Gods. I inform my host and they get to it when they can, which will probably be whilst I'm asleep! But they said there shouldn't be much downtime. However, we might lose some posts because if someone is adding posts while they are migrating....you get where I am coming from. They try to keep the site alive for as long as possible.

Yes indeed cPanel is expensive, although I am used to it. But they are milking everybody!

Might be wiser to put up a page stating Upgrading and prevent any posts until completed?

Propagation working its way through. They had problems transferring the forum, but rather than me going into detail, it did cause a few grey hairs.

Welcome to the club!

Happy to find the forum back this morning (y)

It was behaving oddly at first, eg I could log in, go to a thread, but then hit 'Oops!' on navigating anywhere else.

Clearing all access-programmers.co.uk cookies and logging back in seems to have cured that - just posting in case that helps anyone else.

Is the site still being worked on?

For info, I just tried site search and it throws a 'search could not be completed, please try later' error
I've already done a hard refresh to clear all cookies but that didn't help

When you've recovered and have time, Jon, please post gory details!

War stories can be both interesting and also helpful to others who may consider doing a server move in the future. (y)

Well done on getting there!
