Slow Performance

I have created and database and split the database into FE and BE. I have saved the BE somewhere on the network and sent the FE to all users. The problem is that i and couple other people are able to open the form and use it but some users are not able to open the form right away; they say it takes for ever to open it up. For instance, to select a name from a drop down box; it takes about 5 minutes or more and sometimes fails tool. So i am wondering why me and couple other users are able to open it and some other is taking them for ever just to use the drop down box. We all have the same access rights. Any help or suggestion will be much appreciated. Thanks.

a. Is there a physical location of the workstation pattern - It may be a network issue
b. Close all of fe's and go to a trouble workstation and open the db and see if the issue is still present. If it is you attack the problem from one angle, if not you can attack it from another...
c. Verify everyone has a like build (xp, office, etc)

I have closed all the fe and went to see the person who was having the problem and she was still having the same issue. We are all in the same buildig and using the same network. I am not sure how to check if every one has a build xp, office. Any help will be great. thanks

Are they all using the same version of Windows & Office? Another contender might be: Do they all have the same anti-virus software? This can sometimes slow things down dramatically

Yes, we are all using the same anti virus software since we are in the same company

look at ms knowledge base article for "performance issues" - sorry i cant point you there - this gives a number of possible fixes. There is one particular registry setting that affects multiuser operation.

one other thing is open a connection to a dummy table in the backend, and dont close it, as this helps as well- not sure if its in the MS article

i also find a backend in Access97 works quicker than later versions for some reason.

A follow-up suggestion wuold be to create a real simple database (fe & be) with sudt one table with a lot of records in it. Then build a couple queries etc that really tax the system and run it on a fast machine and on a slow machine. If it works well on both it means there's something inside your production db that needs addressing. If not then you can look else where like maybe the os or office builds - ?

For starters - to examine the os build do windows explore-> help->about windows. This should tell you what build / service pack(s) you have installed. Do a simular drill to see what MS Access version you have...
