Hi,

anybody had problems installing this? i had SQL 2005 which upgraded to 2008 with a program installation so my 2005 management studio no longer works. I downloaded the 2008 studio but it only gets so far then it fails saying 'nothing is selected' but i dont have the option to select anything!

i have tried all types of install but it just fails.

Any ideas anyone? VV frustrating as i need to access the server......

thanks

How do you mean "only gets so far" on installation or running the software?

Hi

I'll post an image. Basically the installer gets as far as a section where I am to select something only, everything is greyed out so I cannot select. When I click continue, it tells me to make a selection!

Cheers

Hi again,

Is this SQL server express? or standard / developer edition?

Go to add and remove programs in control panel and see if there is anything left for sql 2005, uninstall it.

Now try and install 2008 management studio again.

If that doesn't work I would recommend cleaning the registry

Hi,

i had the management studio installed ( not the express ). this allowed me to access and manage my SQL databases. I updated a program, it installed SQL server 2008 and now i cannot access my databases. they still work because my other program ( not updated ) still works. i dont actually know if my databases migrated to SQL 2008 because i cannot install the management studio....

So,

i still have 2005 installed ( which may still be in use )
i now have 2008 installed ( which may have taken over 2005 )
im reluctant to remove 2005 until im sure i still have database copies

i feel like im a bit stuck to be honest! I cant access either database.

cheers

I finding it difficult to fully understand you scenario here, so I will have to ask some more questions, please bare with me.

What version of sql server did you use to do the upgrade?

What did you upgrade the server or your local machine?

What is on your local machine, just the management tools which no longer work? Or a local installation of SQL server along with the tools

What you mean by one "program" was upgraded and one wasn't upgraded and still works? Are you talking about seperate instances of SQL server?

Hi,

thanks for the reply-

IWhat version of sql server did you use to do the upgrade?
i didnt specifically want to upgrade SQL server but its upgraded from 2005 to 2008
What did you upgrade the server or your local machine?
The upgrade is local lto my machine
What is on your local machine, just the management tools which no longer work? Or a local installation of SQL server along with the tools
On my local machine, i have SQL 2005 management tools and SQL server 2005 and now SQL server 2008
What you mean by one "program" was upgraded and one wasn't upgraded and still works? Are you talking about seperate instances of SQL server?
i dont know to be honest. My CRM program was stored on 2005 for the last 2 years. when i upgraded Visual Studio Express, it installed 2008. My CRM program still works as before but i dont know whether its collecting the data from 2005 or 2008 which is why im hesitant to remove all trace of 2005 without fully backing up first. My CRM program doesnt have a backup option. i used to access the SQL database through management tools and back up that way.

Hope that all helps and thanks for your time :)

hi there

It probably installed SQL server 2008 express along side your sql server 2005 installation.

You can check this by right clicking on my computer select manage and then clicking on services. Your 2008 SQL service should be called

SQLServer (EXPRESS)

and your SQL server 2005 installation should be called

SQLServer

What is listed on your start menu / programs under

SQL Server 2005?

and

SQL Server 2008?

What happens when you try and open SQL Server 2005 management studio? Your SQL server management studio should still be working

Here is an article explaining how to install SQL server 2008 express management studio

Hi,

here is a list of SQL related stuff installed on my PC. Please note, i didint actually install all of this, i installed 2005 & management studio.

What do i need to remove to get my studio working again? when i run the management studio, i get the error when i try to connect to the server saying it cannot connect to a server later that 2005 and then closes.

thanks

Did not see if your workstation was XP or Windows 7.
My same experience on an XP workstation two years ago resulted in very disfunctional results. Installed 2008 on a 2nd XP workstation and had no problems. Once the prvious version was uninstalled, registry cleaned - re-install the newer version - the problem went away on the orginial XP workstation.
Two years later at a new location, using Remote Terminal to get into the SQL Server itself. That may not be an option at your location but it is my preference.
