Ok Guys,

What's happening.

It is all over the News down her but they just keep repeating the same thing.

Hope you are all safe.

Massively overhyped to prevent legal action after the Italian earthquake forecasters jail sentences for underplaying what could happen in L'Aquila.

Reminds me of the Queensland floods not so long back - in global terms hardly worth mentioning. IN fact, worse, hardly did get a mention.

Very interesting.

Almost like the boy who cried wolf.

There are fires, floods, and power outages , oh and people dead, sounds pretty nasty to me.

Brian

Probably not hearing from people in New York, New Jersey area as there is a massive power outage. Approximately 2 million people without electricity on North East Coast. Lots of Tidal Flooding.

Daughter in NY lost power last night about 11 pm NY Time. Daughter in Boston says all ok there.

Stock Exchange in NY had three feet of water on floor last night.

Actually, pretty messy situation that will require several days if not weeks to clean up.

Yes, it's a pretty nasty situation, but so far not nearly as bad as it could have been. People were smart enough to heed warnings. I don't see anything wrong with over-hyping a storm to protect people. When people don't listen, it only puts more people in danger because then they have to be rescued. New York is also not quite as prepared for these type of storms as we are down here. If we suddenly recieved 6 inches of snow, there would be panic here, although New York would shrug.

I heard that some buildings of great historical interest were destroyed, some dating back to the mid 1990's.

It is very serious and fortunately for the most part people heeded the evacuation orders or it would be much worst.
The coast area is pretty much a disaster zone, 16 persons have perished not including the captain of the sailing ship and one crew member caught in the storm just off New Jersey shore. 50 homes burned in Queens NewYork while firefighters could not gain access to douse the wind blown flames and worried more about containment then putting the burning structures out in +70km/h winds. Severe winds and lots of water everywhere with the tides and surge more then 3 meters above datum.
Inland there is a lot of mostly wind damage which is still happening, one person in Ontario Canada persihed from flying debris near the start of the storm as it reached Greater Toronto Area.

Once again we see that the damage in the US would not be nearly as bad if the Americans learnt to build houses with bricks instead of flimsy timber.

I was disgusted with the BBC coverage of the impending strong wind in the US. They kept referring to "the Americans hunkering down" - "hunkering down"? Not a phrase we use or understand, why use it on the BBC? Absolutely disgusting.

I have fired off an email complaint to the head of BBC news.

Col

That's funny - I haven't heard hunker down in a long time, it's like an '80s saying. Is the BBC really that far behind the times :p

It sounds bad.

At least most of it is a repair job not a complete rebuild.

One solution would be to prohibit development in hazardous areas (within a floodplain). Unfortunately, that prohibition is politically unpalatable.

Instead of re-building (ocean front/floodplain) the government should condemn the properties at salvage value. Essentially, planned "retreat".

Because of the way Sandy moved and her size, North Carolina was essentially under-the-influence for four days. We were lucky, Hurricane Irene for us was much worse. But Sandy is much worse for New York and New Jersey.

Ken

No power for 7 days in NY is the same for any other place.

No water, communications are out, no fresh food, no sewerage etc.

The difference is that there are a few more people.

This is where a good Disaster Recovery Plan comes into its own.

I'm thinking that just the potential for looters/criminal activity in NY vs where I live in it's self to be enough to say it would not be 'the same'. ;)

Ken

Looters are low life.

They should be shot on sight.

Obama must be thanking god for the storm, it'll do him the power of good in the election.

He's reacted about 100 times quicker than Bush did with Katrina. But as we know Bush doesn't think much of the dark deep south. Whereas New York et al is much closer to Washington and is much more important than a few jazz clubs.

Hey Col - been a while

Is Rich still around?
