There are plenty of things to do wherever you go. The questions are, 'What do you like to do?' and 'When will you have time to do them?'

I have never been much of a city person so the attraction of doing anything recreational in a city never appeals to me. If you have the time to get out of New York City and into the countryside it is absolutely amazing to say the least. Upstate New York is having the leaves starting to turn colours now, just quite a drive out of town though.
Kansas is also beautiful: rolling hills and open vistas, super friendly people.

Being from Kansas. Get away from KC and head west on I-70. Go to Salina, one of the best places to eat hamburger Cozy Inn. Stop in Abline be for Salina, great old west town.

Hurricanes, tornados, drought. Derelict farms gone bust. Baking heat and parched ground. Saw it on tv the other day.

Also South from KC on 69. Near Louisberg, KS is the Louisberg Cider Mill. Excellent root beer and apple dough doughnuts (only good fresh).

KC has some excellent Bar-B-Que, I prefer Gates and Sons (South side of KC).

In KC there is a museum with a restored steamboat, very interesting (at least to me).

Growing up in Missouri and visiting my grandparents and uncle in Kansas, I remember a lot of flat land. Manhattan had a great public pool some 40 years ago (getting a little to cool for that) and nice public parks. I do not know how much the university has taken over.

Why not go to "Are-kin-saw" then you can upset the locals by mispronouncing it by calling it "Are-Kansas".

This made me laugh. I've always wondered about that.

And speaking of hurricanes, we're having a lovely day in Florida today. :D

And it looks like "Franken-Storm" will play havoc with the whole East Coast this weekend. Double Red Flags!!

If you're looking for a short day trip head north up the river, to Leavenworth, there's a famous prison there :)
