Unrelated question. What is the opposite to a Black Ball. (Usually associated with a vote)

Errrrm...I know a black ball is associated with (secretly) voting someone out or off, to 'black ball' someone is to make them unwelcome, to ostracise them or "send them to Coventry". A white ball is used as an affirmative vote, so presumably is the opposite?
I have no idea where the phrase "send to Coventry" originated.
Or am I missing something?

have you been to Coventry? lol

Seriously, i belive it might be something to do with a Civil War where AWOL soldiers or captives were sent as there might have been a strong hold in Coventry and the locals didnt loke it so never spoke to anyone who was 'sent' to Coventry!!!

cant be certain but i vaguley recall that from my school days

That sounds vaguely familiar, but I thought it was WWII??
Yes I have been to Coventry but only briefly, a couple of times for interviews and once because I came off the motorway at the wrong junction! I think every place has its drawbacks and you can find good and bad people wherever you go. In reality and in the ether!

Most people do say White Ball which is close but not close enough.

It has nothing to do with Coventry.

The only information you have is Black Ball.

I dont think I can work this one out. There isnt an opposite colour for black or for ball. There is only an opposite meaning for the phrase.
I think you will have to tell me...please?
Ani:confused:
