Ken, thanks for all the help. got it working now here's how:

vntDest = "c:\" & Forms![Front End].[Combo6] & "_basic.xls"

DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel9, "Export", vntDest, True

That works fine, so thanks for the help again

Q. Did you dim vntDest as a variant? If so, why?
