I was recently working on an MS Access database. However last night I closed the database down as normal and now the database will not open up. When I try to open the database I receive an error message that reads "Unrecognised database format c:\mydb\changecontrol.mdb"
When I look at the file size the size is as it should be. My machine also still recognises the file as being an *mdb file.
So far I have tried the following:

- rename the file to a shorter file name
- attempted to export the data out of the db to another file
- have used the MS Access compact utility to attempt to resolve any issues and this did not work either?

I think I have exhausted all of my options, does anyone have any other ideas????//

Thanks

What version of access are you using? If 97 is it possible your db has bee converted to 2000? or did you last use access 2000 and now you are opening your db from a shortcut or the file directly. If so Open Access97 and then try opening your db.

I have tried opening the file in both Access 2000 and 97 and neither will recognise nor open the database?

This is usually a sign of a corrupted database.

You can try to repair the database with the Repair Utility built into Access or the Jet Compact Utility that can be downloaded from Microsoft.

If these do not fix the problem you will need to revert to a recent backup to recover.
