For the usual reasons, I'm looking to upsize my back end Access database to SQL Server (Express), something I've not done before

A few of our users spend a lot of their time out of the office and currently take a local copy of the back end and use the FE (which has an option to link to 'Live' or 'Copy' BE) to allow them to reference information.

If I upsize to SQL Server, would I have to install the 'full' server software or could I use the new Localdb functionality?

I can't find much online about Access and Localdb but wonder if that was because 2012 is fairly new or just not possible/practical

or could I use the new Localdb functionality?

At least in IBM DB2 lingo, there is a developer or some name edition of DB2 which does not accept connections from remote computers. "Localdb" sounds at least similar.

If so, then you would be limited to accessing SQL Server only with the computer it is installed on. No remote connections.

Thanks mdlueck

The intention is to use the Localdb functionality when users are out of the office (for reference) so limiting access to the machine it is installed on is fine.

Just need to find out if it is possible/easy!
