Click on someone's post. In the upper right, click on the wee little green box directly under Posts:

We then see [UserID] & " is on a distinguished road", e.g.

"Stumpy is on a distinguished road"

What do you suppose that's about?

It means that you're sort of behaving yourself in the forum.
If you've been very very naughty, then it would read

"raskew can only hope to improve"

No idea who determines whether you've been naughty or not.
Perhaps your spouse :D

Love it -

Or perhaps:

"RV has obviously too much time on his hands. We all pity and pray for his long-suffering spouse!"

Best wishes -- love your posts (although you've obviously stepped off the deep-end on this one)

Bob,

It's all about reputation. Do a search here. It's something relatively new
implemented here.

Wayne

Wayne -

There's something wrong with your link!? It doesn't work. I'm very much afraid to point this out 'cause I suspect that you're about to hammer me. None-the-less, could you take a look at the problem. Call it up yourself and see if it works for you.

Best wishes,

Bob

Hello Wayne -

Are you there? A response would be helpful. Come on, big guy, help us out.

Bob

I think Wayne's post didn't have a link; he merely underlined the word "reputation".

Underline

Link

The code:
Code:
[PLAIN][u]Underline[/u]

[url]Link[/url][/PLAIN]

Wayne, if I'm not mistaken, the reputation system isn't
"relatively new". It has been around for at least two years and more likely longer than that. This forum is unusual in that reputation isn't really emphasized.

Bob,
If you are talking about Wayne's reputation comment, I think he just underlined the word and it's not a link. I guess we have to search for ourselves.

If you are a heavy user and don't always think before you post, you can stimulate people to click the scales and make a comment as to your reputation. Last time I looked I was at minus 10 and the tag says ".. has some shameful behaviour in the past".

Brought me up a bit short, I can tell you.

I have tried to be better but still seem to piss the odd person off now and then. I can't see me getting onto the "distinguished road" for a long while yet.

We live and learn. At least we live.

Keith -

Color me dumb. Can see that you're no longer on a distinguished road, but can't figure out how folks got you there. Please describe the process -- who did what to whom.

Bob,

Firstly, I wouldn't want to call you dumb. People in glass houses etc! :D

The scales at the top left are a link to the reputation menu. There you can give a negative or positive tick for the post and add comments if you like. Somehow these are totaled into a score that is used to reference a table somewhere that gives the assessment. This might not be exactly how it works, but in essence I think I am right. Otherwise, somebody has specifically stated that I have shameful behaviour in my past - ouch!

I was in the red before I realized the facility existed.

The comments added to mine were along the lines of "should try searches first". There is some truth in this but sometimes it is difficult for a newbie to know the terminology to search. I honestly search as best I can before every post but sometimes you don't understand the answer and sometimes you are asking the wrong question.

In my case, I was tasked with creating a database with no previous knowledge of databases, other than the general appreciation of what they are and a reasonable grasp of the intricacies of MS Office products. I read various books before I started and then waded in. I was completely stuck until I found this forum and the gurus here pointed me in the right direction. In hindsight, I can see that if I re-read the books, all the things that I didn't get would be intelligible to me now and I would gain a great deal from a second trip through that mill.

In conclusion, thanks for all the help gurus and sorry for pissing you off. :)

Keith,

Stop already! The question is not about 'pissing me off'. I'm just lost about how this works. Reference is made to 'the scales'. What scales? I'm not seeing any scales. How does one reference them?

I initially thought that RV's response was just a zinger. Apparently that's not the case and 'color me dumb' I'm just not understanding. Just looking for clarification.

Best wishes - Bob

Hey Raskew, I'm thinking about giving you a bad wrap well, just cos why not :D

Why doesn't Oldsoftboss's reputation read...

"Oldsoftboss is on a distinguished bumpy road" ?

Bob,

I think the other thing that pisses people off is that I go on too long. Certainly annoys my wife.

The top right corner of every post, on my PC at least, shows an old fashioned balance scale, as held by statues over court houses the world over - the scales of justice. Click on them and all will be revealed. :)

"Fuga is of the scale"

Is that a good thing?

Fuga.

Keith -

Thanks to your patient directions, my vision has returned.

Best wishes.

Bob,

It's easy to get a blind spot when working on your own.

I sometimes feel like the pantomime dame with everyone shouting "He's behind you!" when I'm missing something obvious.

I'm glad your curiosity has been satisfied. :)
