I'm thinking of getting an MP3 player.

Its got to have a display I can read  and buttons that press nicely and be simple to operate. Its got to be able to sort by artist / playlist or whatever. Preferably with an FM radio. I'd like it to hold up to 1000 MP3 or WMA songs.

Can anyone help with suggestions from their own experiences please?

Thanks

Col

You may want to consider the battery life per charge as well ;)

Col,

I have an Apple I-pod with 4 gigs.

Built-in games (Music Quiz, Solitaire, Brick and Parachute) for handheld fun anytime you feel the need. Integrated notes reader to download text and read it on the screen; supports contacts, calendars, to-do lists and text notes; date and time display and sleep timer.

My battery usually last upto 12 hours or so. The only thing that is missing is the FM turner.

Overall I think it a great gadget. I have over 900 songs and they are all catergorized by type of music. Classic, Rock, etc...

Also it very affordable I mean I bought mine for 180$ so I really don't know what that price is in your country.

Here's an option I once considered; Some of the newer portable cd players will play mp3's. And some also have the tuner. Since you can cram 700m+ on a cd, that'd be 150 - 200 songs, which has to be good for 8-10+ hours worth of music. I just didn't care for the bulk. (Spoiled lot, huh)

Hmmm, yes thats an option but I think I'd prefer the flexibility of being able to do playlists or sort by artist etc.

We've got 100 CD's on our jukebox at home + another 20 or 30 CD's that are left over, so something to take that lot all in one place would be brill.

Isn't that amazing...

Do IPods have the ability to play video?

I think there's a high end ipod that does images, Not sure about video... I'm sure the apple.com site would answer that :)

Col - Here's another deal breaker for me; iPods have a gizmo you attach to them that let you play over your home or car stereo  :)

I'm an iPod user but I'm also an audiophile and there's a part of me that wishes the Rio Karma was around when I was portable shopping.

I don't know how much you know about mp3's but it's a lossy format and despite how intelligent the algorithm is for removal of 'unneccesary audio data' many people actually can hear the difference.

Nowadays I'm recording all my music into a lossless format, .flac (or Free Lossless Audio Codec). It's an opensource codec you can set up with winamp or zoomplayer or most other players. The rio karma even plays it! Sadly, it's still pretty heafty in file-size but the quality is perfect, literally.

Something else to think about in mp3 players is that the overwhelming majority of encoders and even the players themselves tend to pad music with upwards of a 600ms gap between tracks. Again, some people don't mind--but to me, the transition in the middle of Abbey Road is CRUSHED with that gap.

iPods have a 500ms gap between their tracks. I'm thinking about installing linux instead of the apple proprietary on my iPod and seeking solutions there. But the Rio Karma is happily free of this common error in either mp3 or any of it's other supported formats.

Just some thoughts,
~Chad

I bought the psp so I'm able to watch movies, play games, and listen to music. I just use my usb from psp to computer and download all my files onto psp. I have 4 movies and 200 mp3 music files.

The graphic and the sound is unbelievable. Only downfall to it is the battery life span (4-5 hours).

I guess that maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I've never been one who's bought into the all-in-one solution, not even the TV-vcr. Ninety percent of the time I could find one or more components of a combo that I could get better quality out of a dedicated system. Sorta like why I have a rackmount stereo instead of a boombox. The other nice bit about dedicated components--when one goes bad or becomes out of date you can replace them individually.

Edit: This is also why I don't buy Macs. :D
