When to lookup values

It would be like this

tblExtrusions
ID    Name
1     Ext1
2     Ext2
3     Ass1
4     Ext3

tblAssemblyContains
ID  APID  ExtID
1     3     1
2     3     2
3     5     1
4     5     4

So Ass1 uses ext1 & ext2 and Ass2 uses extrusions ext1 and ext3

I see and if it was a component Extrusion you would have another line in
tblExtrusions
ID Name
6 Ext4
tblAssemblyContains which would be something like:
ID APID ExtID
5 6 6


So this would indicate that Ext 4 is a single piece Extrusion/Assembly

No - there is no need for it

Ext4 is identified as a single piece Extrusion/Assembly because it is not in the table.
