The world I guess is the concept of human civilization. A world can be small or big, depending on the perspective. The end of the world event can happen for many people, and has, and will continue that way.
As for 2012 end of all civilization. There will be another Doomsday prediction, then another, then another, and another. People don't seem to get tired of it. I'm sure you can find at least one person who thinks it'll be the current year whatever that year may be. If actually does happen, I guess they'll feel vindicated...? Good job? It'll be coincidence, but good luck convincing them otherwise. They called it! No evidence, no reason... just said so.
