Hard to imagine any spreadsheet holding a candle to Excel

I'd have to say Excel if just for the Macro Recorder. A good starting point for Excel VBA.?

Learning javascript I found a lot harder.?

I would say Excel, but goggle sheets have some cool features. As mention before google sheets works across different platforms, like android. I know people who use google sheets with barcodes, with their android phones to do quick inventory tasks. Also google sheets plays very well with google forms, you can setup google forms for a survey and the results are instantly updated to google sheets. Once in google sheets you send a link to people in your group, they may view or edit the live survey in real time. Try doing that with the Microsoft office suite.

Google Sheets has come a long way.

I like that it has a =COUNTUNIQUE function. Why doesn't Excel?

Because each has different unique features, I find myself using both depending on the need. But, I prefer Excel because running from your local disk is much faster than using a web app.
