My guess is a very good bit of dirt that allows a population to live all across the country. But probably the main reason is the sales/results type attitude which is underlined by the rights of the individual at the expense of the community.

Australia, with about the same size and a population like America had in the 1800s, is the opposite. As a country we follow the English system.....everything should be regulated etc. and etc.

Because america has a lot of cottages and hamletts which developed into Villages and Towns. (Civ 4 reference)

Seriously tho...

80% of all surplus money (investor money) from europe and Japan have been invested in "growing the new lands". I would be surpised if America didnt lead the "western" world in advancements etc.

Lead the world in what way?:rolleyes:

I am intrigued by the question - as Rich says lead the world in what exactly - is it worth the supposed expense to the community?

If the world was like a big country then America would be the capital city.

Technology....man on the moon, Space Shuttle....the list of where they lead is endless.

I don't quite agree with Mikes take on this,

Socailly the US does not lead the world , a half hearted health care system, education system that is flawed unless you have money (this also applies to the UK as well) .

The US has the resources , food , oil etc to be pretty much self sufficent - however these resources are running out (hence the Gulf)

on a moral issue - if the US lead the world then Zimbae would be different

Ooooo...and we lead the world in being bashed on these forums! That, no doubt, is due to our numerous faults which no other country shares.

I'm not sure how other Americans on these forums feel about it, but from my perspective, I never even knew that anyone thought we lead in anything...nor did I ever care. Just like I don't really care if everyone hates us because of the piece of "dirt" we were born on. It just doesn't phase us. Maybe that gives us time we would normally be spending wringing our hands to actually produce something valuable. But maybe not.

my post was not a yank bash - but the question lead to a view that the US is the world leaders - which I don't share , the US like every country has its faults and its positives .

I would agree that the USA was a leader, sadly, those events you mentioned happened decades ago.

Since then, it's been a downward spiral not only for the USA but for the rest of the world - yes - the USA now leads in bringing terrorism, economic meltdown, and oil prices in the UK at $10 per gallon etc. All because they voted in a religious freak dictator who thought he could rule the world.

It will take the USA decades to get back to the 'glory' days. Meanwhile they will continue to be the most hated country on the planet.

Like Bob Hope, Charlie Chaplin - British bred.

Beckham is merely trying to teach the Americans how to play a game that the rest of the world enjoys and not partaking in schoolgirl games where the USA (and Canada) are the only ones vaguely interested.

Being first does not mean being perfect.

America is the action centre. Col and Rich blame the US of A for the world's problems which means they must think America leads the way.

ok... no offense taken

the US has much to offer , and with a change of President is an ideal time to do this.

We in the Uk has a leader and a goverment that is so out of touch that we cannot wait unitl we can get rid of ours .

mind you the replacement goverment might not be much better

Just seen the Osmonds - all nine of them(just done a recount - theres only 7 on show) - on TV just now. America certainly leads on teeth:D

Would it suprize you to discover than in N America, football/soccer is considered a school girl game?
While boys do play the game, it is primarily teenaged girls who make up the largest percentage players. This is fine as they seem to have fun and the legacy is the US domination of the women's World Cup.

Boys play baseball (and love it) in the summer (yes, some play soccer), N. American football in the fall and basketball or hockey in the winter.

There is a great deal more than a couple of time zones that one passes through when you cross the Atlantic. Without making any declarations as to who is right or wrong, perhpas we can just agree to differ on sport.

The US leads the world in much the same way as Britain did when it was the world's only super power.

A ruling class, rich beyond imagination and totally entrenched in power.
A middle class who yearned to join the ruling class.
A working class that lived in poverty and desperation and that the other classes ignored, except of course when you needed some work done.

The odd thing is, in those days Britain could have easily afforded the Welfare State. They waited until they were practically bankrupt at the end of WWII to do it.
Strange.
