Hi there,

I'm having a problem joining a workgroup on a users machine. I tried joining a workgroup that I created and that's sitting on a server (Secure.mdw) and then I tried joining the System.mdw that's on the user's harddrive. With both attempts I'm getting an error message saying:

"Access denied"

Any ideas on why this is happening? I'm able to join the Secure.mdw on 2 other user's machines without any problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

No I haven't. Since I'm able to access the database through a security shortcut I've put this issue on the backburner.

I think my first step might be to reinstall Access. Do you have any ideas?

I'm not sure I completely understand the problem. Instead of using the db shortcut (which joins the appropriate workgroup) you are trying to use the work group adminsitrator to first join the appropriate workgroup and then open the db without the shortcut... Correct?

Can the users pc write to the registry? In our facility using Windows 2000 they (IT) are able to block me from writing to the registry. If I need to use the work group admin they have to give me temp rights to do so. This also means that if I want to create a new work group they have to do the same thing.

I was having problems getting my database secured, so I was going to join that SECURE.mdw file that was on the shared drive so that anyone that attempted to open that database through Windows Explorer or File-->Open in Access on the users machine would get prompted for a password. I know this isn't the correct method for securing a database, but it was a temporary solution. When I tried to join the SECURE.mdw workgroup that's when I got the Access denied error. I have since gotten my database completely secured and have a security shortcut on the users machine and everything works fine. It's just strange that I couldn't join a workgroup with the wrkgadm.exe.

Let me know if you need anymore info.
