Ok, this is where I admit I'm lacking in up-to-date knowlege.

I've been looking on YouTube at some of the brilliant bass guitar covers of classic songs. (The bass player playing along to the CD or record)

Also there are some classic songs on there with just a picture as the "video".

I have no idea how this is done, has anyone any clue? Do you need special software? Can I just upload a song with no supporting video?

What I'd like to know also is has anyone any ideas about what webcam to use for recording a bass guitar?

I admit I need help here.

Any webcam would work, they are all pretty basic. You'll have issues with skipping, etc if you computer is not good at processing video. If you have a digital camcorder, that'll work even better. Most of those types of videos you see are most likely recorded that way. Webcams just aren't as clear as digital camcorders. They are usually only used to record something straight to youtube, such as a quick video blog, where no audio/video editting is necessary.

The "videos" you speak of with sound and no video (or a picture as a video, such as an album cover) are just quick video creations where the audio is laid over as the audio track and then the picture is added as the "video" track for the length of the audio.

So what software does this then Vass? I don't have a camcorder or a webcam yet.

Windows Movie Maker will do it (if you have a Windows computer) - if it's not already installed on your PC, you can download it free.

When I first started getting into this, I used Windows Movie Maker. It's surprisingly good and will do what you want. Just work with images and audio instead of movie clips within the application.

Loads of tutorials on YouTube under "Windows Movie Maker"

EDIT: You don't need a webcam if you don't want to create movies. Just drag an image and audio file into the app.

If you are buying a budget camera for online video, I would skip the webcam idea and get one of those pocket digital camcorders, like this one:

-reason being, it's portable - and it does all the recording for you - the files it creates on the memory card will drop straight into a movie editing program.

I've heard good things about the flip cameras.

All of my video work is just done on an ordinary digital camera, in movie mode (because that's all I have), but it's approximately the same quality as some of the pocket camcorders.

I don't know what your price range is for a camera, but Panasonic produced a very nice 3CCD camera that you can pick up used for a good price. Check your area for a Panasonic PV-GS120. This is an excellent video camera. If you want to go to the trouble, you can send me your finished tape, and I'll run it through my Avid system and produce your video in whatever format you need, and ship it back to you.

Oh, and most digital video camcorders can be used as webcams as well, so you can record them directly to the pc just like you would a regular webcam, but the hardware in the camera is capable of doing a lot more processing, thus you will get a higher quality video.

Windows Movie Maker is actually perfect for the application you would like. I believe most people use it for youtube videos.

If you do use Windows Movie Maker, change some of the settings - any of the settings.

What I mean is - there are so many videos out there with title pages in the same font in white on the same blue background - take a little time to find something that looks distinctive, nice and maybe a bit different from the defaults

Col I bought a JVC HD digital camcorder in Jessops for £150. This is what we used to film the nutbush video on Youtube. This cam connects to your pc and can automatically send it to Youtube. Good quality video and easy to use with great onboard Dolby sound.

PS There are also some bloody awful bass playing covers on youtube - but they are quite entertaining!

Here's one result - this is me singing on both these and if you want to know which one is me - I'm the drummer in the stills pics (click on "more from ColinEssex" to see the other one).
One song is a cover of an old Beatles song, and the other is a punk version of an old 60's hit called "Tell Him".
Our group has now disbanded but we have formed another with me still on drums and the lead man is the same, the rythmn man and bass man are different now.

Thanks Shane. Actually the punk type song was just for a laugh, but we did it at a gig and it went so well, we had to repeat it.

The Beatles one is one I've always liked alot, I like the words and it's got a nice driving bass line.

I'll try and post some more - I haven't got any more of me singing (thank god) but we've done some instrumentals that are quite good.

If I get a camera like Barry, I'll have a bash at recording some bass lines by playing along to some tracks.
