Hi there,

I have been using the following to professionally deploy my database:

Access Runtime for 2007
Developer Extension - Deployment package.

What I want to know is?

Is it possible to deploy a split database. Putting the main tables DB and Frontend in a location under "Program Files" and the shortcut on the desktop.

Or when using the windows installation package to deploy your access package do you not need to split it.

I had a thought that you always keep the database tables backend separate and just package up the front end?

Any ideas

if you're using the ADEs, you have to package both sides of the db, otherwise they won't be available to your users through the installation packager.

ADEs in 07 are good. They're pretty easy to use. I have actually have a FAQ written somewhere on this board about the installation process.

and if I remember right, desktop shortcuts can be specified by the users when they run the msi. (or whatever ext. the packager puts the files in. I can't remember)

Just a word of caution here. You can't deploy an Access database to Program Files in Windows Vista or Windows 7. You need to use a different folder. I don't know the exact reason why they limited it like that but it doesn't like letting Access database files run from that location.

Bob...I'm pretty sure I've already done this to the contrary. As in, my home machine. A vista 32bit. Now, I do know that for 64bit machines, the "X64" folder for program files is the default so most programs send their files to that dir.

Is that related to what you're talking about here?

Nope, not talking about that. All I know is that we've had people post here (and on Microsoft Answers) about it and by simply moving it out into another folder on the root, it will work where it won't under

C:\Program Files

or

C:\Program Files (X86)

EDIT: It could be just Windows 7 then but I thought it also did it with Vista.

Bob, are you talking about specifically using the ADEs?? Or will the windows MSI installers also do this crap??

What exactly happens?? As in, will it not LET you spec to those directories when packaged?? Does it throw an error when trying to install?? Curious...thanks.

It will let you put it anywhere you want. It just won't run when you go to use it.
