My Country, Your country

Dick7Access Dude, for one BIG CON there is more to America than just the U.S.A., if people keep calling the USA America then everyone disliking the U.S.A will dislike us by default. Now that's a con. BTW in America, the continent, not the fantasy, there is United States of Mexico and United States of Brazil as well, for those who did not know. -Just saying (and no I don't dislike USA in general, just little things like that one, you asked for an opinion).

Viscar, I dislike a lot of little things also, and a few big things, but I would not want to live anywhere else with the exception of Costa Rica. I visited there a couple of years ago, and like it a lot. The thing that I would hesitate about is that Costa Rica has no military and the only reason it is not overrun by some of its radical neighbors is that it has a treaty with the USA to defend it, or at least that is what I have been told by friends in Costa Rica. If that is true, than if the USA folds or goes completely communist like it is headed than so will Costa Rica fold.
You maybe right but I have never heard anybody refer to the United States of Mexico, they just say Mexico.

I dated a phlebotomist once also, but I had to break up with her, she was out after blood.

John,
Does Australia have a two party system. If so what are they called?

It does indeed. There are two major parties and then a couple of minor parties.

We have the Liberals (right leaning) and Labour (left leaning) although recently the Labour party has been moving more toward the right forcing the Liberal party to more further to the right in an effort to differentiate themselves. We also have the Greens. From time to time there are also other minor splinter parties, one of the current ones being the Sex Party. Candidates can also run as Independents with no allegiance to any party.

Thats scary, sounds too much like the USA!!!!

So the UK doesn't have any racists then?

The vast majority of Australians are decent people. You must be very naive to expect that online comments give a true representation of the wider community.

The way you lump us all together in your comment sounds rather prejudiced if not racist itself.

Personally I am quite happy for you to never come back here.

Lack of reality there - I never said UK didnt have any racists - in fact I explicitly said it did? I also picked out 1 example - which obviusly I have remembered as being a stand out from all other UK or otherwise in my memory.

I could pick many many more in my 12 months ish spent in Australia - which outweigh what Ive seen in the UK in decades.

I didnt lump you all in together- I said it was rife, common? It is.

Why would you wish for someone who points out racism in Australia is rife, not to come back. Surely stamping out racism would be a better solution?

Depends on your viewpoint I guess.

I am sorry to here that your stay here was not as you expected. A very unfortunate experience for you.

I certainly hope that you weren't given the Tag of a whingeing Pome. That would have made your stay even more unpleasant.

At least you are home now with Family and Friends who have things in common with you.

My stay is always mostly pleasant. But some very nice people in Australia, come out with some of the most racist things I have ever heard. Why - not cos they are nasty. Its just so prevalent - its almost accepted thinking. They think nothing of it.

Sorry yes - finding rascism not to my taste - maybe does make me a whinging pom!

I find it interesting that you invite Dick - who seems to be quite into a bit of Islamic scare mongering, over for a visit? But dont seem too bothered if a born and bred Aussie doesn't like to come back - cos she finds the racist tones uncomfortable.

To be honest I think - if she put up with it for long enough - shed get used to it and think of it as normal? I keep telling her.

Run by me, the rich boat people thing again?

Were you glad the Christmas Island boat didnt make it to Australia?

Similar to how many governments use their black highlighter on official documents made public...

For isolated portions of a quote, I usually use the Reply with Quote first, then edit the text in the quote that appears, deleting what I don't want to use.

There are two things I particularly hate.
The first is racism in any shape or form.
The other is whinging poms.

Romper stomper, nuff said ;)

Wasn't that a Movie with Russel Crowe. I seem to remember it from years ago. But what is the message you are trying to get across.

Also what is "Nuff". I assume it is some local slang.

In any shape or form - really?

The second - you do surprise me! Surely you should just hate whingers no matter where they are from?

Still waiting for this rich boat people theory? I cant see any logic in it at all?

Fascination is a mouse staring at a snake readying to strike at that mouse. This thread has rapidly grown in posts because of this fascination. When I visited Fort Lauderdale in 1959, I did so by bus from Toronto, Canada; passing through northern New York. It was my first visit to USA and I had no awareness of racial prejudice until that first evening when the "Whites Only" signs indicated which entrance, which bathroom and which water fountain I could use. Talk about cultural shock! On East Las Olas Blvd (in Ft Lauderdale) I took a bus into Miami, choosing to sit towards the back...and was glared at by the African-American passengers for invading their space. When I was at the lodge, sitting in the veranda chatting with Americans, I stood up and opened the door behind us to let a woman with a heavy load of bed linen (from the efficiencies) to enter, where she likely was to do the laundry. The Americans were incredulous at my action, indicating disapproval because the employee was black* (excuse the use of this word, if you are American; it is what they were called in 1959.) My point is: times change and USA has a President of a different colour now. :o

Yeah, these are the kind of people we have to try to debate and take seriously. It is very difficult to do so in the USA. Any tact you take, they will try to slam you for it. For example, trying to point out how a specific poster seems to get most of his info from the extreme right, has difficulty with simple computer concepts, spreads information without checking it at all for accuracy, etc. How much value should the general public place on statements from someone like this?

There are many people like this in the USA, however. They will hear a snippet on a radio station, TV, or the internet (usually from a Nigerian Prince), and pass it on to their friends. They can't comprehend the damage that they are doing to the general discourse of the country.

I am reminded of the story of the young men and the old man. A young man coming in to town and spotted the old man sitting by the side of the road, and ask him what kind of town this was. The old man asked what kind of town did you leave. He said it was miserable, the people were back biters, racist and only out for themselves. The old man said you will find the same thing here. The next day same scenario. This time the young man said, oh it was a good town; the people are sweet and would help you out. The old man said you will find sweet people here.
The old prophet was acclaimed to have knowledge of everything. A young boy said he could stump the old man. He said I am going to take a little bird and put him between my hands. I Will then ask him what I have in my hands, and then ask him what kind it is, he will never guess the first two, but if he guesses I will then ask him if is alive or dead. If he says dead I will let it fly away. If he, says alive, I will squish it between my hands. Hey old man what do I have in my hands? He said a little bird, my son. What kind is it? A baby sparrow my son. Is it alive or dead? That’s up to you my son.
Every Country I have been to had some nice people, and some nit so nice.
