The Painful Truth | Jordan B. Peterson
Dr. Peterson offers a fascinating perspective on democracy and why every individual has a vote. It’s not simply about the “right” to vote—it’s about ensuring the process reflects the collective social morality of the population.
One of his striking questions was: Would you marry yourself? Imagine an opposite-sex version of you as a potential partner. You’d know all their flaws, quirks, and hidden defects. Everyone I’ve asked has said “no.”
From this comes the realization that politicians are no different from the rest of us—they carry the same hidden flaws and imperfections. That’s why checks and balances are essential, and why the collective wisdom of the population through voting matters.
To illustrate, think of the classic “guess the sweets in the jar” game at a local fair. When all the guesses are averaged, the result often comes remarkably close to the actual number. In the same way, the collective vote of the population tends to arrive at the most accurate answer.
