Why do so many posters have their locality....a secret

Of course - why would anyone want to stay there?
The sole objective was to get enough money for a house deposit - when we had enough we came home and bought a house. Simple.

It's bludging parasites like you that has ruined our country!!!!

One would choose to stay because of the delightful people you meet there (?)

There was no way we could afford a house in the UK. Australia PLC paid our fare and we stayed over the required 2 years. We fulfilled our part of the agreement then came home after 3 years and bought a nice house we would never have afforded on UK salaries.

Staying was never an option, it was purely financial.

In the early eighties, had a delightful year in Sevenoaks. I came home skint because of English prices!

There's something not quite right here

That's Thatcher for you.

We worked out that we earned 3x our UK salary in Oz. That meant with the average price of a UK house at £14,000 we needed only to get £5,000 for the deposit. We spent £500 on an overland trip from Oz lasting 3 months, and we had enough for the deposit and to buy furniture etc.

This period was from 1973 to 1976.

Being as we had a free trip out there anyway, we didn't care about buying a place in Oz, we rented a flat. We took what we could get away with and ended up with a nice house in Sussex.

No that was the previous labour governments that destroyed our economy, just as New Labour has been quietly doing, or have you not noticed the increased taxes, perhaps you blame the town hall for the doubling of Council Tax, and being a government employee Gordon hasn't stolen you pension pot.

An old political trick.

The upper level of government brings in a program just before election time. They fund it until everyone gets used to it. Then they download it on the next lower level of government saying we're not going to fund it anymore. If you want it to continue, you pay for it.

This is generally followed a year or two later by the second tier downloading it on the third tier.

Its hard to say, they all seem to screw things up - I know what the current mob are doing, but who would do any better - not that Eton public school millionaire for sure. I do think it's odd that the current mob give £40 billion to Northern Rock, yet the air ambulances are funded by donations and not the NHS.

As for Thatcher, someone had to do something about the 1970's strike attitude - whether it was right or wrong what she did is infinately debateable. Her love affair with Ronnie RayGun didn't help matters. As with most people, one tends just go with the flow and look after your own patch as best you can.

Fortunately my pension was a final salary one, the NHS has (or had) one of the better pension schemes. Many NHS employees opted out and were tempted into private schemes, but sadly they came a cropper due to mismanagement of the schemes.

I'm glad I stayed with the NHS.

As a group, the Americans on different sites seem to be the most secretive.
To respond to part of the original question, I HATE to be in any way associated with what "my" incompetent, corrupt, and evil government is doing. So that is why I don't list my location, although now you know what it is.

There are only a few here who assume that a government represents all of the views of all of the inhabitents, if I thought that anybody thought that New Labour represented any of my views I think I would take an overdose washed down with copious supplies of Malt Whisky.

Gosh, that number's gone up from just the two previously accused of this trait, who else has been added to the list?

10 miles away from me - and if you could afford 7oaks - bloody hell. thats pretty expensive property belt- even the cheap end is ouch ..

and we trouched on pensions again..
most pensions would be in a better state if they had not had Brown do a tax grab on them , he did it at the worst possible time -he took a large chunk at the excat time that the pensions were at there lowest - (particaluly due to market and in part down to a certain amount of mismanagement by a select few companies.

that comment could of come from me ....

Actually, I had it pretty good - did an exchange with a local who went to Aus when I went to England. The good part was that work paid the rent (it was only the terraces near Tescos).

The bad news was that I still went home skint, but probably due to the amount of sightseeing we did. You're right though, Sevenoaks, while being very delightful, is certinly out of my price range.

It is a wonderful town, 1/2 from London, and in the middle of Kent Countryside ,

It was a place I have looked at living in but only if I work in London .
