Wouldn't it be amazing, if this caught on, all over the country...?

'GOOD MORNING, WELCOME TO THE UNITED KINGDOM '

'Press '1' if you speak English.'
'Press ''2'' to disconnect until you can

I'm not from the UK but I'm all for it. I have a picture of John Wayne, standing in front of an American flag, and he's saying "now tell me again why the hell I have to press '1' for English?"

P.S. Just to cut Col and Rich off at the pass. We do speak English we just butcher it up real bad and do not speak as properly as you do but at least you can understand what we are saying. :)

Hi Shane
in case you didn't catch it on the other thread saw this on a T shirt at London airport.

Homer is saying
"English! Why should I learn English, I'm not going to England."

Just passed one of the local high schools and noticed one of the Welcome signs, it was written in about 15 different languages, I wonder what the percentage of Japanese is in the school? No wonder our council tax is so high:rolleyes::mad:

Vienna Swiss Pastry & Delicatessen used to have WELCOME around the door frame in many languages... then the OLF forced them to remove all of it except for the Bienvenue because in Quebec Canada they have language laws that French must be predominant on all signs visible from the outside of the shops. Seriously a prejudicial point of view in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with learning about other cultures and other peoples ways.
If you want to see how bad it can get then just Google The Office de la langue francaise (OLF), all they are missing is white hoods and burning crosses...

Sounds like the sign business would be a splendid sideline in the UK right now. What with minorities, tides and the like. :D

we agree on something eh Rich...flamin' council tax wouldn't be as high round here if we weren't the Polish's Second homestead..i'm not racist, come and work, but speak the lingo, pay your fair share...anyone catch the BBC2 season on immigrants some months ago...very interesting i felt..

i find it more interesting when it's highlight how with each wave of new cultures to a country how the last in turns their nose up and says the place is now full of f' foreigners...and how the area has gone down market..happened when the banana boats came in, the irish, the asians..the polisy, portug', the lith's, the africans...no cronolgy here but it makes me chuckle...

And the local council, considering what they claim the cost of replacing a sign is:rolleyes:

I am sure the Clactonian People felt the same when the Swanscombe girl showed up which is why they did her in...

Clactonian = first human inhabitants of England
Swanscombe = next people to immigrate

Eh

Geeee... the petty bitching about new comers has been going on for thousands of years, time perhaps for people to get a grip and get on with living for the few years they are on this planet.

Oh, holy guacamole, what a perfectly true statement. If only folks would just realize that when we tell them to "get a life" that we don't mean "at the expense of someone else."

Where did I say I objected to newcomers?

i see Rich's point...i read into his post that come if you can speak english, don't if you can't...

My take is that our councils pander so much to the foreign immigrants..but not in the usual tourist style, places of interest... translate a few things...here we have to put up with leaflets written in 16 different languages, schools that have 32 different dialects, where the teachers have a class full of Mohammed's whose cultural attitude is so different to ours, that the council again bends over backwards for them, yet treats those who speak the local lingo at arms length for fear of upsetting the minority.. we all know this story from the way the media sensationalise it, ok we can get a life. but if that means our elderly folk live in fear of knife carry eastern block migrants then a divide starts to form as they see nothing wrong, its' their way in their country..but they are here in the country we live in with our laws .. that they flout claiming ignorance and no speakie english...which is another thing...then the police are powerless as they have to wait for interpretors, paying more out for that...all comes out of the taxes that are already being skimmed by our MPs for their mistresses...

..hmm, maybe that's my probably after all that...i'm just narked at the MPs having a bit on the side

I admit I stand corrected, you never mentioned newcomers :o

Perhaps you should denounce your citizenship, start to talk jibberish and claim refugee status. Then you will get your free posh council house, the college education you never could afford and the job you always wanted before some foreigner took it.

You know what's funny about that? The Japanese actually have to take and pass 5 years of English in school. :D

And what's even funnier, is that although the school may teach some other language as a second subject its primary subject is and always has been English. It's just pandering to the p.c.s in the system who waste money on frivolity:mad:

Hmm not only did almost all of the Japanese we had contact with speak good English but there was plenty of English signage was common throughout the transport system.

Exactly my point. Most younger Japanese citizens know English very well. When I was there, I knew I could walk up to any 15-25 year old and get perfect directions in English.

Do you have any evidence that the Polish influx is not paying its way? I'm going to laugh off your 'speak the lingo' comments as they are nonsense. I like that multicultural aspect. It's a Daily Mail attitude to be whinging about people coming here, taking our jobs, and not speaking "the lingo", but it's a complete hypocrisy as the British are the ones buying up houses in Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, etc. and I'll wager that only the tiniest of that demographic bothers to get their tongue around the local lingo.
