Go to Japan. I thought Starbucks was American until I went there. They have a Starbucks in every building in Tokyo... with long lines. It seems they love coffee more than we do.

I usually buy tea in Starbucks, I'm not overstruck on their coffee. Plus if you ask the girl nicely she'll let you have a muffin.

Why go to an American chain specialising in coffee for your tea.

Do you not have some nice local teashops, who make tea properly and sell you home made cakes?

Is it cos they invariably have a few seats outside for those daft enough to be smoking?

You'll be telling us you visit Macca Ds next, for a reason other than to drop the kids off at the pool.

For the same reason people go to the chemists to pick up some fresh chops and pop round the dentists because their back has been bothering them.

Someone has to support the big corporate chains otherwise you will have all sorts of local people going into business and keep all of the money local where it contributes to the local economy.

Actually, Starbucks tea is quite nice. No we don't have any of those lovely little teashops in Colchester - it's a sad reflection on life I'm afraid that they're all gone.

McDonalds do also sell tea which is reasonable and in a big cup. I wouldn't eat there though.

Two little stories.
1. The weekend that my heat went out and we had below freezing temperatures and SNOW in Florida USA, I found myself driving in my heated car and stopping by a Mickey D's (something I never do!) for a small fry. I was so pleased that they had added, at some point, hot cocoa to their menu. Gosh, did I need some nice hot cocoa to warm my core! I am sad to report, they do not have good hot cocoa. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't what I would call hot cocoa.

2. I have never been a coffee drinker. My favourite ice cream is coffee. My favourite drink is a White Russian which one of the main ingredients is Kahlua, a Mexican coffee liquer. I have NEVER been a hot coffee drinker though. I AM however, a very generous and kind person and have, upon occasion, stopped by Starbucks to buy my fellow co-workers their favorite mochas or lattes as a nice surprise in the morning.

Well, one morning, I did so. And one of my co-workers asked if I had ever tried his particular latte. I confessed I had not. He encouraged me to try the tasty beverage. I politely declined and told him I was not a coffee drinker and had tried several coffees in the long ago past, and there seemed to not be enough cream and sugar in the world for me to overcome the ultimate bitterness I had always tasted. He gave the typical response that I am used to hearing, "Oh... but you will like this!" I declined again. But he was so anxious for me to taste his favourite latte, I finally succumbed and had my first taste of Starbucks Cinnamon Dulce Latte.

"What do you thnk?" He asked.
"Not bad!" I said, surprised that there was no bitter aftertaste.
"Have some more... take another sip" he encouraged.
"Oh, no... thank you very much!" I replied.
"Well, it's better than 'not bad', isn't it?" he asked.
"Actually, yes. It was rather pleasant." I admitted.
"Well, then take another sip!" he prompted enthusiastically.

I brought the cup up to my lips, about to take another sip, when the effects of the first sip hit me.
"OH MY GOD!!!!!" I cried, as I gave him back the cup and turned to sit back down in my chair.
I had just discovered, as most of the rest of the world already knows, Starbucks coffee has a LOT of caffeine. And when one isn't used to caffeine, let me tell you.... WOW!!!!! What a head rush!!!!!

He gave me half of his latte..... and I went back out around 3 for another one.
When I got home, I was a chatterbox and when my family got tired of listening to me, I called a friend who would talk to me for several hours and knows every Starbucks location in Florida.

I did not become addicted. That week I had a total of 3 lattes. I haven't had one in over 2 months. But I have to say, I understand now.

While we do have Starbuck's and those other national chains here the preferred place to buy coffee in Canada is Tim Horton's.

There was rumor making the rounds a few years ago that the reason people kept coming back to "Timmy's" for another large double double was because they put nicotine into the coffee. A foul lie of course but the stuff of a great urban legend. The real reason is because they brew an excellent cup of coffee. They also write the time the pot was brewed on the outside of the pot and if it isn't sold within 20 min. they throw it out.

Tim Horton was a professional ice hockey player who played for Toronto, New York Rangers and Buffalo during his career.

BTW I was in a Starbuck's in Vienna a few years ago. The menus and all of the signs inside were in English. All of the customers were Americans. My guess is the Austrians don't go there, but then finding a good cup of coffee in Vienna is not a problem.
