We are in the process of updating to windows 7 and office 2010 from windows xp office 2003. I have noticed an issue regarding a .mdb file that uses excel 2003 and an update query. If that database is migrated to 2010 (the .mdb extension is still used), the users that have updated can not save updates. However, the users that have not updated to windows 7 and office 2010 can save changes. Is this a common issue and will the database need to be redesigned in the newer (.accd extension i believe) in order to function properly? Thanks.

Please tell us how they save the changes... as in, are you giving them access to the queryitself?

you do have to be careful

in theory A2010 (and A2007) will operate A2003 databases. In practice, I have had complicated databases which failed to operate correctly, and needed rebuilding specifically for A2007

The code/library references used in both versions change also.

All of this means that especially in a misison critical setting, you need to test A2010 almost as carefully as you would test any new product.

Not only that, you will also find the A2010 ribbons are far different from A2003 menus, and the database window is also quite different. You will have a steep learning curve making the transition.

You may find you prefer the feel of A2003.

Since you can have both A2003 and A2010 on W7, personally, I would retain the A2003 environment as well, on the new machines at least during a testing phase.

I use an Access 2003 database and then use an update query to excel 2003. On a Windows XP OS this works great. When the user opens the excel document the update query prompt is displayed. However, on the computers with windows 7 and office 2010 the database migrated over (though it still has the .mdb extension). The excel opens in compatability mode and there is no update prompt, though it is. Any changes are not saved and an error message appears "access denied". I have given the users access, do I need to do something else? Thanks.

It only seems to work correctly if iif the location is trusted and the user is administrator to the database as well as spreadsheet. Not sure why this is bu, although not ideal, it works. Thanks.

Besides the Trusted Location it may have to do with the folder permissions. But let's be happy it works!
