Does anybody know why an access database would delete itself? The database file was 170mb and it is now about 10mb.. why did it drop all of the records in an instant?

I'm clueless.

Any explanation would be great.

Justin

Perhaps someone either compacted it or turned on "Compact on Close" (in Tools -> Options -> General tab)?

That wouldn't be so unusual.

The database has been used for a long time without this happening before. The access file is never accessed directly, a program reads it but office access is never opened.

Is it possible that a disk clean up was run randomly and compressed it?

Not likely. The method for Compact & Repair has to be explicitly called for, so the next question would be whether the program that uses the file itself had a check and calls for C & R. I don't know but much doubt that Windows would perform automatic C & R of any .mdb files.

No the program would not do that if not called for. Also DbSync is connected to sync data from access to mysql. This is a one way street though. Since it has been connected it has not been syncing data (task scheduler not run yet). The only other i can think of is if somebody cut/paste the mdb file into a sub folder and the program recreated it self..

Well, to reiterate-

Compact & Repair is a Jet operations, not a Windows operations, so simply copying & pasting a .mdb via Windows Explorer would do nothing to reduce the size. However, creating a new .mdb and importing all data into the new .mdb could end up with a smaller size because it doesn't import in all "junk" that caused the bloat.

If it's possible someone could have copy & pasted it into a subfolder, then it's not that much bigger leap that the same person could have had C & R'd it.

Can you verify whether the data itself are intact? (e.g. if you have a old report from past, re-generate the same report and see if it still compares to the old report, for instance).

But would you think that DbSync could have done it? or more likely somebody has been messing around?

Cheers,
Justin

I don't know; I don't use that program and the best thing to do is to ask the authors of that program.

Furthermore, I want to clarify that Compact & Repair is actually a good thing- nothing is being lost but rather cleaned off of the junk leftover from temporary objects & caches. While not necessary to C & R every time we close the file, occasional C & R is good and will also help with performance.

Though, you didn't answer my earlier question if you already verified whether the data itself is still intact.

All the data was lost in the result.

are you sure it lost the records - compcting wouldn't lose the records?

is it a new dbs? - you can tell by the date created

do you have a backup with the old data in it? at least you could go back to that, and only lose a little data.

perhaps you do have a routine that deleted records. and someone ran it by accident

Hi,

This happened to me before. for about 3 weeks, my database deleted itself from the desktop all on its own. especially if it crashed!

I updated Access 2007 and it stopped.

there was a thread here a while back about this issue and as i recall, it was a software issue.
