I'm just amazed at how expensive car insurance seems to be in the USA, compared to the UK.

I realize, of course, that what is posted here and my own experience are a mere microcosm of the whole picture.

In general:
Dick it sounds like a high rate to me.
And all those insurance comparison websites are pure spam/scams IMHO. All they do is give you the rate BEFORE the insurance company runs your detailed driving record, which anybody can do easily - the rate that matters is the one they come up with about a week or two after they sign you up: Oh, we ran your detailed driving record and you got a ticket 5 years ago, here is the REAL rate [enter a slight-to-moderate rate increase]

I agree. And here is another fun fact: in 1979, London police only fired their guns 8 times.

Don't feel bad. I was born in NE brought up , RI, MA CT. I now have my ministry in the south. They keep telling me to speak English, and or to stop speaking in tongues

In Navy booth camp (1960) half the barracks was from New England, MA, RI, CT, The other half was from Chicago, and the Ozarks. First three days we could not understand much of anything we said. Some could not understand why some could not understand why we could not do simple chores. I wondered if the Navy did this deliberately, to see who they can weed out in booth camp instead of the battle field. Here is a funny story I tell on myself. In booth camp at the time we were ordered to wash our own clothes with a bucket, a brush, and a container of Wisk. I at 17 had never wash clothes even in a washing machine. My family in MA owned a Motorcycle shop, service station, use car lot, convenience store. My Dad and I worked the business, My Mom and two sisters did the housework. The guy from the Ozarks Mother supported the family (no father) by teaching school, herself only had a 6 grade education. He could had trouble putting 2 words together. The guy washed the clothes for himself, his three sisters and mother in a big vat with a wash board.

Perfect combination, for working together. He washed my clothes and I wrote his love letters.

Bit a reach even for you Doc man: Britain didn't exist for 740 years after England came into being where we spoke English. That's only 80 odd years older than USA.

Now (American) English and British (English) I can go with.

Mind you, there is so much cross fertilisation between the two these days it's hard to be definitive.
