Hi

Need a bit of advice. I have a list of resources I want to use. I need to be able to allocate a resource for a period say between 5/02/11 and 13/02/11. What I need to so is, if the resource is used or booked, is not allow it to be allocated until after the end date as above.

Is this a simple enough thing? Any thoughts on how to set this up?

Cheers

Nigel

Hi Nigel

When a resource is booked outfor a day or a period of time you also need a boolean flag to say it is on loan. When the resoure is returned the flag is set to False.

So when someone attempts to book out the resource it does not need to check for date constraints but the fact that the boolean flag is False. If it is true it means it is on loan.

That I find is the quickest way to validate a loan items availability.

To add to my above comments.

You may have a resource booked out for a week say, 1st to 7th of the month. on the 8th a person wants to book out the resource. A date range check would say yes they can have it. But what happens if the resoure has not been returned. IE overdue, the use of the status flag indicates whether the resource is say, In Stock, On Loan, Overdue, Out of Stock, whatever. Far better using a status flag tham simply relying on dates.

Hi David

The resource is a person and I need to be able to book them for weeks in advance but not to overlap so the person is double booked.

So here is my thinking. The resource once booked will be a permanent record to allow tracking back so it's fair to say I could create a new table with the job number, task number, resource and dates. I would then create a query that adds the job number and new task number along with the resource. Prior to adding the record, check the query for matching resources and then check to see if the start or end date fall between the dates of the schedule?

Does that make sense?

Are you booking them out for full days or part days or both?

few of custom OCX controls that could be manipulated to suit your needs.

Hi David

Currently I will be booking out as full days. We estimate our production to the nearest day block of hours ( usually 8 ) so in multiple of this. I will venture further into hours at a later date. Ive been working a lot with flex and getting quite use to it. In many ways it's simpler than the standard form objects as it seems more straight forward. Anyway thanks to Peter Hibbs, I'm well on my way to a completed scheduling system that produces gantt charts. This will display the resource and schedule in the correct format. Just need to make sure I don't overbook the resource as our WIP would not be correct and I'd start to get negative figures not to mention non production...
