Compliance gone mad

Ahh your from Newbury -- spent a couple fo years there, strange town..
all changed since I was there - new roundabout (vodaphone roundabout)
opnly 1 halfway decent nightclub - Charlies - and a bit of a dive one down in Thatcham,

nice pub - The wagon??,
and used to be a wine bar near the clock tower (not the pub,the acutal clocktower)

long time ago mind you...

I'm not sure which questions you are talking about but if you restate them i will answer them.
the one about the application form written in textspeak

Show me some evidence, show me how many pupils have used text speak in their exam papers.
I have no idea - ring the Daily Mail

Show me some evidence that supports your claim: "It's rife and growing into areas it should not be used. If this continues, the correct form of writing will be lost."
I haven't got a scanner to post the copy of the message

Of course I wouldn't give it a second look. How many applications for jobs have you seen using text speak? or is there as much evidence for this as there is for students using textspeak in exam answers?

I have no idea - ring the Daily Mail

So there is no evidence to support that students are actually using text speak to answer exam papers then. Still despite no evidence your happy to jump on the bandwagon and use it as evidence of the death of proper english.

Thats all the evidence you have? Wow good to see you points are well founded in fact.

I didn't say I had - my quote was this
If you were a boss, would you like to receive an application form written in textspeak? Would you think that candidate is worth a look?
It's hypothetical - please try to read the posts properly.

not quite the same. I was referring to a (hypothetical:rolleyes: ) scenario where the application form was written in textspeak.

I am finding this thread about textspeak hillarious in a very twisted sense. ;)
It is amazing how many people take communicating for granted when they only fluently interact in one language. Consider for a minute how difficult it is to learn English as a secondary language when a multitude of the persons who speak the language can barely string three words into a correctly written sentence.
English is a hard enough language to learn, it is far worse when people constantly mess it up. In spite of the snipes to eachother in the last couple of dozen posts, you are all coming along quite well
LOL;)

Fifty2 - thanks for giving us respite from what has been a stupid boring thread thanks to Chergh and his picky syndrome.

Thank christ I'm off home soon.. . . . . . .fag first though;)

I don't remember advocating textspeak in everyday use let alone in anything formal. Given this what was your actual point?

Ok the newsround item was a single girl which hardly supports your case that correct english is about to die.

The other article is certainly more interesting. Well done you actually provided some evidence.

So you've now provided an isolated case and a report that raises some concerns about text speak and proper english.

However despite this pass rates in English exams improved last year surely if there was such a dire threat to the english language there would be a marked fall in english pass rates?

Careful here you fall foul of the exam system itself - if te exam is easier or dependent more on course work then the rate increase can be argued away

and your ref for this improvement is?

also - is the (alleged) increase due to easier questions? How would you define it? surely not because the kids are brighter

I was just thinking as I was having a fag, this whole debate is based on your taking my comment, cutting it and using the remainder for a totally different meaning than it was meant. That's actually quite clever, half a mark to you for that.

I'm off home now;)
