You touch upon a point there, Jon. Growing up in the deep south (Georgia), there was always a mistrust of all forms of government. Even though there was no reason to feel the need to take up arms, the possibility of it exists and it was customary to be prepared. I realize it makes no sense and seems extreme to most of the world, but to a young boy growing up this was just the way it is.In these apocalypse movies, there is always lawlessness. Maybe that is why they are buying guns. They anticipate the worse and a big rise in crime.
I do own a 16 gauge shotgun but it is primarily for varmint control and home defense. I do not trust myself with a pistol due to my temper...gotta know yourself and be true.
Now to your point; everyone knows in rural America that if the fecal matter comes in contact with the oscillator, hoarding, foraging and looting becomes reality. Being able to keep what you have from those who want to take it from you in priority one.
