Coronavirus - are we all doomed?

"Scratch his inch"? You give him credit for that much?

Rather unnerving to see the ambulance pull up to my neighbors house last night. The attendants were wearing hazmat suits and they took the husband out. I dont know what happened but its still scary. Its currently snowing, expecting 5" to 10". Probably a good thing as it will keep people inside.

"scratch his inch"

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: that wasn't a typo I assume.

It was...corrected. Jeez...

I stood in line at Costco Saturday morning for about 30 minutes so I could buy toilet paper for my in-laws (they live in a small town and the stores are empty of toilet paper). I have enough for a couple of weeks. Hopefully things will be better by then. As a further note. A lot of stores are refusing to accept returns on a number of items (toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizer, etc.)

This may have been addressed already, if so, it isn't like we're doing anything else anyways...

The number of deaths in Italy have almost doubled China's. What are the reasons? I have read:
1. China suppressed the news, thereby allowing the virus to spread to an unsuspecting world.
2. Italy didn't take it seriously until it was too late (there is some truth to this).

There are other reasons mentioned in this thread but I was hoping for some feedback - mainly on the first allegation.

Naturally, my American friends are singing that song at the top of their lungs, we have to have a boogie man to blame, so I am interested in what rest of the world is saying...

Thanks Doc, but at the risk of this thread heading off in another direction, I simply do not trust mainstream journalism, especially those from the United States. I have seen first hand the spin they put on issues.

I'm not saying they are wrong, I'd just like to hear from the other countries represented here on AWF...

Hey, Mr Nautical. Some good news coming out of Italy. The daily infection rate has reduced over the last couple of days. It appears you may have already peaked. Good news. Same has happened in Germany. Only 2 days of data but it appears promising, tentatively.

well, good for them. here in johnson county apparently we are still at all time highs. lots of dumb college kids. =(

Thanks Jon...you've been on top of this from early on. What are your thoughts regarding the suppression of information?

My view is that there has been much misleading information. Take face masks. The BBC had a program talking about much of the misinformation about coronavirus. Their program then went on to mislead everybody about it, while claiming to be myth busting. They said face masks don't work. Then they say you need to use them properly else they don't work. Then they say there is a shortage for medics. Well, I have issues with that. Tell us the truth! How can you say face masks don't work and in the same sentence say there is a shortage for medical workers? Why would the medical workers wear them if they don't work? They are just trying to mislead the public. There are two types of mask. The surgical masks that are less effective, and the ones with a valve which are very effective. It leads to beliefs that are just not true. I spoke to someone yesterday who said they thought the medical workers only wore them so that people thought they looked like they knew what they were doing!

Next, the washing the hands thing. While it is a good thing to do, most transmission is via airborne particles. This is not highlighted. Most talk is about washing your hands. Face masks help avoid the airborne particles. But this is part of the cover-up. They don't want to tell you the truth about the face masks and that combined with the higher risk of transmission through the airborne route, because they fear there will be a run on the masks which are already in short supply.

So, in my eyes, they have lost all credibility. They are telling part of the story but not the whole story. I have been going to different sources to get clarity on the situation.

My advice is...
Get one of the valved face masks if you can find one (even the industrial non-medical ones are supposedly effective. Disclaimer: ignore everything I say!); wash hands for 30 seconds (studies show it is significantly more effective than the recommended 20 seconds); spray bleach on shopping that has plastic cover; quarantine dried food (e.g. pasta, biscuits etc) for 3 days if it is packaged in cardboard; quarantine your mail for a few days, especially if plastic transparent element on them; avoid a daily newspaper and read online if possible; avoid going to shops if possible, and if you do go, wear a face mask.

Why not turn your risk of getting the virus down to near zero? If the highest risk only lasts the next 3 months, why take any risks at all? Stay safe, stay alive and let the virus become the problem of the reckless and foolhardy.

In the normal course of business it would be UN-USED toilet paper and unused sanitizer and unused paper towels, etc. :p

As far as face masks and washing hands. Everything I have heard. Face masks can be helpful for those infected to avoid spreading the virus (which so far has be transmitted by contaminated body fluids), but probably will protect you from getting virus. Washing hands is pretty oblivious, along with that, avoid touching the face (easy entry for a virus). I have also read about how germs do not live on copper for very long. Apparently there used be a lot more copper in hospitals.

I say good luck sometimes and I am not sure why. I do not believe in luck.
