Possibly a long term thing, but with regards to the database. I have observed for months now the ongoing problems and changes which constantly occur. The explanation I am given is that to transfer over to a server would be time consuming and may have many many unforeseen impacts.

My suggestion is if sometime in the future if there is small amount of money available, we employee I professional database developer/consultant, who with many years experience would may be able to optimise it so (a) it runs faster, and (b) would be able to integrate new methodologies.

Having a top developer working alongside our developer would only benefit us, and by spending some money to employ someone for a few weeks/a month short term may dramatically assist our department long term.

Do consultancy firms/developers charge for the initial visit?

What is the rough price per week to have a developer in?

where are you from -
check google
check yellow pages

And the price will probably be higher than you are quoted. Having had to work with the trusted person who caused the problems in the first place, I've found that they are incredibly reluctant to change their bad behavior and allow you to do the right thing. This adds to increased time, increased cost, and a still broken system.

the array is HUGE.

I can work for practically nothing, but if people REALLY know what they're doing, you will be paying through the nose for them. They really charge for the knowledge that they have, just like accountants do. That is changing very quickly though, with huge competition comming from developing countries.

Accountants and the like don't have the luxury anymore of charging $1,000 per tax return like they once did, because people do them now for $20 a return. Kinda sad if you ask me. Can we say, "we are cheap"?

Depending on the group, you can often get an estimate for free if you advertise the need for an RFP (Request for Proposal) when you are searching for the group. An RFP is a written estimate of time and effort. In order to provide one, a group has to come to you and talk to you. In all of my years in business, I never paid for an RFP, and have never charged for one either

There are many variables to consider including:
  • The country involved.
  • Local economic conditions.
  • Difficulty of project.
  • Availability of additional work.
  • Whether the project is paid per hour as opposed to Fixed Bid.
  • Incentives for meeting/exceeding deadlines.
Hope this helps

Right .

if you are UK based you could ask one of the UK guys on the forum - if they would be interested-

(I am picking the UK as it slightly smaller than the US) - if you stateside - then see if one of the forum members is in the same state (or near by )

ideally it is best to get it done in house - by yourself or /and others

but hat is dependent upon the depth of your system
