Database Project ~ Help/Advice needed ~

Hello all AWF members and guests.

This thread I have created is in regards to a Microsoft Access Database Project which I have been given in which I am to plan/design and implement these designs to create my own final database. The database will undertake a structure of a Relation Database. The database itself will be based on the information used and dealt with within a Video Store.

For the Database Project for the Video Store I am to create Elementary Sentences in which I am then to form Conceptual Schema Diagrams in which can then be used to form the database and to structure it. The Elementary Sentences are formed by finding what information is needed to be stored and then forming sentences that can be made into these CSD’s.

The following contains the information of which I have already thought of which a general Video Store may need to contain, but this was only what I could think of and I was wondering if anyone would be able to add to my list and if they had knowledge of Elementary sentences be able to form them for me to add to my list:

In terms of the Video/Tape:
Video ID Number
Tape ID
Title of the Video
Shelf placing
Censorship Rating
Hire Cost
Amount of days a video can be hired

In terms of the member and Members of the video store:
Member ID
Family name
Given Name
Phone Contact
Street Address
Town
Postcode

In terms of the process of Hiring and the Fees involved:
Time of hire
Return Date
Returning a Late video
Overdue Video

These are just the first things that I could think of involving a general video store, if you are unsure of the above and need me to explain anything further please just post below. I will appreciate any type of advice or help given greatly.

Your opening thread sounds very much to me like this is homework or school related. Dur to the terminology you are using. Anyone using such phrases would suggest they are familiar with Access and the like. Yes we can help you, but only with specific questions. Nevertheless I hope you gleen from this site the information you require.

here's a tricky one that occurred to me, when returning a dvd

you just pop it thorugh the door, and they know which dvd it is

now they have dozen's of copies of the same thing - so they must actually have a unique (barcode) for each DVD - not just for each title.

You may need to bear that in mind in your project, but it depends how complex you have to make it

Since your problem is a video rental store, try searching the forum for topics such as "Rentals" and "Bookings" - which at least somewhat impinge on the topic of video rentals.

Interestingly, some video stores do track by a Unique ID, but others simply track by the UPC code to count the DVD as part of an inventory. Let's say the store carries 50 copies of a particular title. When they scan the UPC code, they can opt to check it in or out, and it simply adds or subtracts the piece quantity for that particular UPC Code.

Although, if you had to track rentals by Customer, via single barcode scan, then yes, you would definitely need to employ a Unique-ID scheme.

in UK the biggest chain is called Blckbusters - and you can return a rental just be dropping it thorugh the door

so maybe its anoher way - maybe they have a chip on the box, that stores the cutomers id when they book it out to you - they must have someway of knowing which customer returned a particular DVD, of which they have several copies.

Yes, in some rental setups, the rental has an RFID tag, and the tag's Unique ID is used to track the individual unit: Title, status (checked in, checked out), Member ID, etc.

So, Lokym1, how long has your teacher given you on this assignment?

I think it might even go further than that. Around here, you can rent a DVD from One BlockBusters Video Store, and return it back to another. It works like a a Public Library, or perhaps Rental Car company.
