December 21 2012, should we be worried??

i put my trust in god

ever stopped to think who put all these ridiculous thoughts into peoples' heads in the first place? religion is a farce. people (religious leaders) use religion to scare the shit out of other people (followers) in order to make them (followers) do what they (leaders) want.

it's usually abuse driven and a front to either make people miserable or to get money off them. most often it's both.

originally i think religions came about by people wanting to 'know' (in a philosophical sense), but eventually narcissistic, power-hungry f-wits realised they could manipulate the situation and lo and behold came about corporate religion.

You kiss your mama with that mouth?

There are those of us who find great comfort (and much more) in our religion and feel neither like an abuser/manipulator nor like one who is abused/manipulated.

Thanks wiklendt (as in you) for helping us (dense religious folks) understand how we (mindless followers) have been so duped by religion and it's leaders.

I think the more important question is:

What should we do now so that we will not worry about such things?

It's a difficult job Shane, but somebody has to do it:D

if you're allowed to like your religion, then i'm allowed not to like mine.

i had a catholic upbringing, and i have several issues with catholicism - i'm not saying religions don't have their positives, but more often than not, the cons outweigh the pros. and not just catholicism.

case in point: i've yet to find a pope who hasn't condemned homosexuals. (edit: and you'd be surprised how many people follow his word blindly - which is why his "condoms perpatuate HIV/AIDS" comments are so scary, people don't stop to think, they just do what they're told (granted, not all people). very very scary)

like, i don't see how mutual and consensual love between two adults can damn you to hell, but hey, some people believe it enough to murder gays - figure that one out for a christian act. then they simply confess and get a clean slate (so they believe). i can't be part of that kind of belief system.

i'd rather be a good person and do good by others rather than being told that if i sin, it's ok because i can confess my sins and re-set my going-to-heaven eligibility, or be told that by being born i've sinned (WTF??!?) and i have no hope because of my sexuality.

there are many other examples of cons besides sexuality that i disagree on (the crusades was an obvious "oops" for the church, idea of condemning babies to purgatory, buying your way into heaven, you are not worthy, all that damned "testing" your faith, etc etc) - and god help you if you're a woman, a non-heterosexual, a child, or an animal - talk about mass patriarchy. not so bad now (still around, of course) but certainly more obvious in history (like, being stoned to death if you went to watch a sport and happened to be not a man).

there are also many points that i agree on (love thy neighbour, do unto others..., turn the other cheek, etc, etc) but if i disagree so much on so many points, i can't consider myself a part of that religion, and i also can't consider that religion to be good.

it's more so what humans have done TO and WITH and IN THE NAME of religion that i object to. people use religion justify their actions (or as an excuse) when they don't see that their actions are causing more harm than what they're 'fighting' for.

i'm just not comfortable with that. i'm content in just being a good person without all the B.S. and severely condescending attitude/behaviour/metality (which i only noticed once i left the church) that catholicism forces on people - it's plain unethical.

how would you feel if your partner "tested" you every week to see if you still loved them? it's insulting, and i don't believe that god (or colourful variation of) is that arrogant, self-indulgent, or disrespectful to actually *need* to test people. puh-lease.

hm. bit of baggage there, i think. *blush*

I think Catholicism should be banned under health and safety rules, all those men in frocks swinging their balls around during the service, if the chain breaks during the ritual it could be a real eye opener

Their balls smell nice though.

Merry Christmas!

Somebody's getting a smiting for Christmas. :p

This is like comparing God with the spagetti monster -just cos you can think of one rediculous idea and somehow equate the two - doesn't mean the other is equally unsound.

I've never liked reductio ad absurdum. It's an open invite for false analogies.

Just to neatly ignore the religion squabbling ;)

Saw a docu on Sky tv last night about the prothecies of the Mayans, Nostrodamus, and the Egyptions about the end of the world in December 21 2012, should I be worried
I'd say that if you want a date to worry about 03:14:07 UTC on Tuesday, 19 January 2038 should be one for the diary.

That's the point at which 32bit Unix systems reset their system time to be 1901 again as they store system time in a signed 32bit integer as the number of seconds since 1st Jan 1970.

But I'm sure there wont be any 32bit Systems kicking around by then right? :D
