I saw this on the news yesterday and thought it worthy of a thread.

Firstly I cannot express how bad of an idea this operation is. (In terms of the person's safety)

I mean we do not even know how to restore and mend nerve endings in the spinal cord in people with spinal injuries.

But severing the spine completely and attaching it to another just seems psychotic in thinking that it would work. (Although a long time a go, Heart transplants were viewed the same).

Not to mention the Immune system rejecting the new head! Immuno-suppressants would have to be a daily thing (maybe even hourly) and even then, illness would be common in the patient due to lack of his immune system, AND THAT'S IF IT WORKED.

In the 1970's the same operation was performed on a monkey. (Yes I know we have come far since then) But the monkey was kept alive via a machine for 9 days. after the 9th day the monkeys immune system rejected the head and it sadly died.

And the most important point - You are decapitating a human , Dr.Sergio Canavero proclaims that spinal injury has nothing to do with severing the spinal cord (Although we all know severing the spinal cord makes the host paraplegic) apparently he claims that the spinal injury is caused via the force created by the injury. 26000 newtons of force is caused in spinal cord injury (he claims) and is incurable. Whereas the blade used to decapitate this human being will create just 10 newtons of force.

Didn't the SS try things like this on the Jews during the holocaust?

You guys have any opinions on this?

(On the other hand if it does work, I'm sure this procedure will definitely open up opportunities and ideas towards other medical breakthroughs!)

Legal mindfield - Yes

Probably terminal - Yes

But I heard there was a terminally ill volunteer - free will I guess.

There are all sorts of ethical concerns, yes, but let me ask you this: we've used knowledge gained from the Nazis to improve treatment of hypothermia. We've used knowledge from Japanese biowarfare experiments on people to develop new ways to fight and stop the spread of diseases (and, sadly, to improve our own biowarfare capability). Both Soviet and American space programs would never have happened without Nazi rocket scientists.

But we should write off this process immediately simply because Nazis tried something similar? If you argued that having an organ donor save dozens of lives by donating individually should trump using a donor to save one, then I probably would have agreed with you. If you'd pointed out that getting a case where you have one person with major body trauma and an intact head at the same time you have a suitable body available where someone just died of a head injury is incredibly rare, again, point. If you'd pointed out the incredible ethical dilemma where this could cause people to be killed in order to provide bodies, yes, definite point.

Also, as you pointed out, it wasn't that long ago that heart transplants were considered a horrific abuse of medical knowledge, and some opponents swore that people would start getting 'harvested' to provide hearts for the powerful. Again, I would expect that some of the knowledge used in those procedures came from that monster in Auschwitz.

But seriously, Nazis did it, therefore it is evil? By that logic, no one should be a vegetarian because Hitler was one.

This certainly would be a way to prolong life. But at what cost..

I agree in the wrong hands and without proper controls, this would be a rich man's play ground for harvesting bodies just to keep their own megalomaniac ideas alive...

Page 248 covers the press of the first successful heart transplant.
Before that, a chimp's heart was used on a human and many other experiments.

In the 70's I had a summer internship for my Electrical Engineering (more electronic controls) with the engineer who assisted Dr. Barnard. Just try to imagine the state of electronics back in this day!
He authored a series on the body-letrics that to me seemed to be the foundation for a later book The Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life
He started a company that lead to bio-feedback and other innovations that faced opposition by the FDA (industry lobbyist fighting change) and other moral conservatives.

I bring this up for two reasons. One was the moral outrage of the heart transplant.
The whole Frankenstein stigma.

The other is that the heart (pacemaker) needs the neural electromagnetic interface.

Back in the day, he had experiments that used electromagnetic stimulation to regenerate limbs. I am not saying complete limbs. The process did show that cutting off specific animal limbs and applying the stimulus did create significant re-growth.

His theory was that the genes in each cell contain all the blueprints for all the cells.
That with bio-feedback and stimulus, someday a human could re-grow an organ, limb, or other parts. Enter the FDA to oppose this kind of idea.

The ethical issues will always be there. In that way, the Frankenstein book was truly ahead of its time. It just may not always be the village who stops the progress.

Thanks for the replies guys! Very detailed responses :D

Body harvesting is definitely a issue for the future if it works. Don't say that to any NWO believers - They'll have a heart attack.

I guess this is just how people felt back in the day heart transplants were looked into.

Science is an ongoing thing and maybe this is what the future is. Less hover cars and lasers, More Full body transplants and nuclear weapons. :D :p

Aaaand I just had a vision of 2000 year-old Frankenkoches standing behind the GOP in 4015 pushing the new platform on how it's only fair that workers pay for the privilege of being able to work, as employers have already invested tons of money in facilities, lobbyists, and golf clubs.

Thanks for the nightmare!

(And before anyone gets too bent out of shape about me 'making up a strawman', this actually happens in North Korea - people not only are required to work where they're told, but are required to pay for the privilege.)

If That happened one day maybe a brain transplant may be possible!

From a 90 year old man into a 20 year old body. Quite scary what could await if this were to work.

With Cloning technology and Stem Cell technology, you could create a younger version of yourself, Transplant your brain from an older body into your own younger body, and keep the cycle going, ala... immortality...

and since it is YOUR body, There would be a highly reduced chance of the immune system rejecting the brain!

In before Scott clones a Scarlett Johansson! :D ;)

...except we know that brain death occurs. We know that there are proteins responsible for brain neural breakdown, such as alzeimers. No matter how young your body is, it wouldn't prevent this from happening and you'd eventually die, potentially even faster because your immune system helps delay this, albeit not indefinitely.

As far as paralysis is concerned, we become paralyzed because of the destruction of spinal neurons, typically due to swelling after damage is done. Kevin Everett became a unique case where cold therapy was introduced to reduce swelling and help prevent this damage to his spinal cort that should have paralyzed him from the neck down. He's now walking.

They reconnect nerves all the time when the injury is clean enough. A clean slice with minimal damage to the spinal neurons could very well be possible, but to what degree, who knows? Even in instances where someone severs a hand, there is some obvious loss of functionality in varying degrees. Losing functionality in even a small degree at the brain stem level would be very dangerous, I imagine.

There's also been hope with recovering this connection using your own body's nerve cells that regenerate in the nose:

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-29645760

And we've genetically engineered viruses to cure cancer:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-48088/How-polio-cure-brain-cancer.html

And living without a heartbeat:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/04/health/permanent-artificial-heart/

Can you imagine being knocked out and getting tagged and bagged because they don't feel a normal pulse? Yikes.

It is already here Connor.. I read an article not too long ago about people being abducted for their body parts. There is a long list of them.

its called communism one step away from, the lifestyle you and others want for America (socialism),, Oh, by this time we will only have one party system
and the party will be the Liberal Democrats. so you nightmare will be about a party that is allowing illegals in the country and giving them the right to vote as citizens.

Years ago there was a horror film about a scientist and his girlfriend. It seems he was following in Prof. Frankenstein footsteps. One day they had a car wreck and quess what happened? She was decapitated and he was unhurt. Needless to say, he saved her mind, head, hair, eyeballs and all. In the end, it was the indignation of not being allowed to die and the fact that he was fixing to de-head another beauty for her body. Somehow and I forget, they both died in a fire. Oh, the other woman survived.

Now yes this is a little different version but in the end you will have people who need a head and people's heads who will need a body. A mind can wonder anywhere here?

OK, so a question...

If I as to place Brad Pitts head on my body, would this make me Brad Pitt, or would it make Brad Pitt me?
